What to do with my mums that are coming up?!? (NJ)

I planted mums in the front of the house for fall last year, and they are coming up pretty fast.  I mean, they are probably already the size they were last year...all green.  Do I cut them back again, or just let them come up?  I'm in NJ.  THanks :)

  • I usually pinch mine back a few inches every week until the fall and mine have never died.

I found this, there is more explanation (sorry no clicky... On a mac...)

  • I pinch mine back until July 4th, then they are ready to bloom in the fall!

  • Keep pinching back until mid-july or so and they wil be ready to bloom in the fall!  I have had neighbors that don't and they end up blooming in June.  How nice that they came back....mums are touchy--sometimes return and sometimes not!
  • My mums are huge.  I cut them back by half 3 times/year if I want them to bloom in the fall.  Memoral Day, July 4th and Labor Day.  I've stopped cutting them early before and just let them bloom.  You do still have to cut them back a couple of times though because the stems can get really tall and flop over once they bloom.

This is what I would recommend.
