Purchasing local meat in bulk

For those of you who purchase meat (beef, chicken, pork) in bulk from a local farmer and then freeze it, I have a few questions...

1.)  How much meat do you purchase at a time and how often do you purchase meat?  How many people are in your family?

2.)  How big is your freezer?

Re: Purchasing local meat in bulk

  • I don't have any useful info to add to this thread, I just wanted to wave hello to a fellow Central IL nestie!  I don't see too many of us, although I'm still pretty new!
  • We bought 100 lbs beef and a side of pork (80 lbs) last November. I expect it to last us through the summer at least. Although we will be doing a lot of entertaining (grilling!) through the warm months...so I might need to supplement with certain favorite cuts.

We are a family of four and I think our freezer is 10 cubic feet. It easily accomodated the pork and beef, and at one point we had a few chickens and a 18 lb turkey in there too.

  • we got 1/4 beef, I think it was around 160 lbs packaged up. We probably also had about 50 lbs in our freezer from the last purchase. There are 2 of us but we sometimes share some meat with family.

We have a single stand up freezer I don't remember the exact size but its around 17 cu ft I think. Also I use space in my mom's freezer if we don't have room because I have other things in the freezer, not just the meat.

  • 1. I bought 1/3 of a pig a few months ago. My 1/4 of a cow is coming in two weeks. I have 4 whole chickens coming in about 2 weeks. There are two of us and a two year old.

    2. Our freezer is a chest one, maybe 7 cu ft plus the one with our fridge is about 2 cu ft. I have no idea what I'm going to do with all my cow because it's going to be 4-5 cu ft more and our freezer is already mostly full.

  • 1/4 beef, it fit nicely in a standard sized deep-freeze with a little room to spare. I think it was ~180 hanging weight (so a little less packaged).
