Geocaching

DH's friend told us about geocaching this weekend and it sounds like SO much fun!  I think we are going to give it a try on Sunday.  Has anyone else done it?

For those of you who are unfamilar with it, it is a high-tech treasure hunt.  People go to a site like this one and log things that they 'hide'.  They then leave the longitude and latitude coordinates on the website.  Then you go to find it and leave a note in the 'log book' as well as take the old 'treasure' and leave a new 'treasure'.

Re: Geocaching

  • I havent tried it, but I saw it featured on an episode of law and order: SVU once!

...though it turned out a rapist/killer was leaving notes that way...hmm...

come visit for a weekend... or maybe we can try it out :-)

  • A good friend of mine used to do this all the time!  I love the idea of a modern-day treasure hunt.  Let us know how it goes!
    Anniversary
  • My DH and I do this from time to time.  Its a lot of fun and a great outdoor activity.  There are tons of geocaching sites all over the place.  It's fun to go on line and log what you took out of the box and what you put in.  Some of the pieces/coins have serial codes on them and you can check them online and see where they have been (some have been all over the world).

Do you have a hand held GPS?  That makes things a lot easier!!

  • I have not actually gone caching, but I have a friend that is absolutely addicted to it....I personally don't see the fun in it but to each their own.

If you do go, have fun!

  • oops! Sorry, I didnt mean to freak you out! Its just the only way I had heard about it :-)

I'm sure you will be fine! It does sound like fun!

Nope no handheld, but after we try it a few times we may invest in one :-) or see if there is an app for it.

  • sweet. thanks for posting this. It sounds fun and they even have some here on the island. DH and I are always looking for ways to make this place seem a little bigger, maybe we can find some new places to hang out with this "game".
  • I know quite a few people who are into it - the first one being an OLD math prof in university.  The people I know who've done it - love it.  i agree.. I don't really think it would be my thing (I prefer a hunt in the mall for that perfect shirt :)
  • Are the treasures shoes and purses?  If not, I may have to pass.
