Anyone from Lake Charles?

Hi Girls! I'm hoping you all might be able to help me....

I'm from the AZ board, but thought I'd pop in to say hello. My DH just got word that his job may be transferring him to Lake Charles for a few months and I've gone into "research mode".

So, is anyone living in Lake Charles? If so, how do you like it? Can you tell me some areas to look for housing/what areas to stay away from? What are some of the must see/do places in the area?

Any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated! :)

Re: Anyone from Lake Charles?

  • My DH is from Lake Charles.  It's actually a really decent city, but be prepared for the humidity! Fog warnings are a regular occurance.

As for living, if we had moved back to Lake Charles (other than the living with the in-laws we just did), we'd have bought in South Lake Charles or in Sulphur.  Stay away from east Lake Charles and personally I don't care for Moss Bluff.  As far as West Lake, it definitely depends on where in West Lake.

I'm not really sure of the whole must see things.  During May there's contraband days, where the city gets taken over by Jean Lafitte's (a pirate) crew. Other than the first day, I've heard it's the typical boozy festival crowd.  The city has McNeese State University, which is actually very active in the community.  They have lots of things to do within the community, and most can be found in the paper (like most Louisiana cities). The Chuck (as Lake Charles is affectionately called) also has a few casinos. The nice and most popular one is L'auberge du Lac. Much of the activities in this area revolve around eating; good thing there's plenty of places to do it.  Our favorite used to be Darrell's.  The Darrell's special is an institution.

If you have any more questions or need recommendations, or heck just need to know anything about it in general, feel free to ask :)

  • Thanks Rachae! I will pass this info along to DH! It will definitely help when trying to find him a suitable place to stay.

I have a feeling the humidity and fog are going to really take him by surprise. He's definitely an AZ boy through and through and loves the dry, hot summers here. Luckily, he's a fisherman and I hear there are some great lakes there....maybe the humidity won't bother him so much if he can spend a few days on the lake catching bass.

I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions once I get into researching. I hope you don't mind!

  • Don't mind at all.  And yes, plenty of fishing...both freshwater and saltwater. My DH loves it too.
