Economical wine for a party?

What are some decent brands that are super economical & where is it sold? I don't want to spend a lot (like $5/bottle max).   Trader Joe's and Target Wine Box are out!

Re: Economical wine for a party?

  • Are you completly anti-boxed wine?  They're not what they used to be, i.e. Franzia, and can cut down on cost considerably.  I got a box of red for $25, which was the equivalent of 4+ bottles.  Also, any leftovers were kept fresh by the bladder system inside the box.

I served these at a party last October, an they were great:

  • I recently watched a segment on the Today Show with a guy from Food & Wine magazine who recommended great box wines!

  • I was going to suggest sangria.  You can get away with a cheaper wine and adding things stretches it.  Another thought is to check for case discounts.  Even my grocery store gives a 10% discount and you can mix and match.
  • I like Oliver Soft Red wine.  We can usually get it for about $6/bottle at Sam's.
  • I really enjoy the Barefoot wines.

All fo teh whites I have tried with them (which is all that are available) have been pretty good. I think they are between 4.97-5.97 a bottle and I know that if you buy 6 you usually get a 10% discount... I have never had the complaints on those.

  • Look into stores like Total Wine and see how much they would charge you by the case.  It usually winds up being considerably cheaper that way.

I'd second this. Here is a product review I wrote up regarding boxed wines, with a couple more brands to choose from.  It probably needs to be updated - Black Box is the staple at my house but I've also enjoyed wines from Hardys and Banrock Station.

  • I also recommend Barefoot wines, but only their reds.  I have found the whites are a little too harsh, instead of smooth like an expensive wine.  Another favorite of mine is Yellow Tail, which comes in big bottles for about $13.  I've tried almost all of their wines, and I have always had a good experience.  Have fun!

  • Nathanson Creek , CA (Big Bottles - they have frogs on the label)

Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

  • I personally have never met a boxed-wine that I liked.  I've found that Carlo Rossi sells wine in a jug that is actually quite good.  I'm not sure what you are serving or the kind of function you are having, but their Chablis is really good as a white table-wine option.  They also make a variety of other wine standards.  Up here it costs about $6 a jug.  I'm sure it's a little cheaper down your way.
  • Dude the creator of boxed wine passed away.  You could totally do a boxed wine party & have a slap the bag contest (for a rowdy crowd), haha. Call it frenzia mania!

If that's not your cup of tea, I agree with the PP' about the barefoot wines.

Really?  I guess "different strokes for different folks" comes into play here, because I think that stuff is swill.  It's alway what my alcoholic grandmother drank for over 20 years because it was so cheap.
