Sick Days question... anyone?

so DH and I are leaving our current position. We work for the state (teachers). They are giving us the run around about our sick time. Whenever I have left any other position I have been paid out for any vacation or sick time accrued. Is this required? Does anyone know? I have like 20 days saved... i would prefer not to get screwed. thanks a bunch!!

Re: Sick Days question... anyone?

  • Hate to tell you but you will not get your sick days paid out...here is a link for you.. looks like the hold them for 60 months... we have a friend who will have the same problem it does suck! He has been using his annual leave days here and there too.

ETA: HAve you guys had any luck selling your house? Our neighbors just put their house up for sell I'm curious how the market is in our area.

  • I think they pay out vacation, but not sick.  I'm with the state now, but they did the same thing at my previous employment.
  • My DH left teaching last year. He got paid for his unused personal days but not for his sick days. I think that's probably standard, because I worked for a pretty large company (not the state) before coming to grad school and they had the same policy.

This was my understanding as well. Sorry :(

  • No, there is no regulation that states that sick time has to be paid out - sorry

    yup. it sucks.

this is why DH is using his sick days a little more liberally now since he's leaving next year.

  • If you plan to ever come back to employment with the state of NC, be sure you leave your pension contributions in place so you don't end up starting over and losing benefits.  I know some people that have withdrawn their retirement and regretted it, even if they didn't hit the magic 5 year mark before leaving.
  • fudge. looks like i might be sick :cough cough: for like every friday for the rest of the year. So I dont get it then.... how do these teachers retire early - like by a year or two - using their sick days? isnt that essentially getting them paid out?
