Question about name changes

Okay, I have a few questions for you guys:

1. how long does it take to get your marriage license back?

2. how did you go about changing your name?

I know SSA first: is this instantaneous or do you have to wait for them to mail you something?  did you girls just call?

then DMV: can you keep your old drivers license for airplane tickets you've already booked? do they give you a new temp that day?

How many certified copies of the marriage license did you need to order?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Re: Question about name changes

  • I didn't get married in CA, so I can't tell you about the wait-time to get your license back. But once you get it, here's what I did:

Go to the Social Security website, print out the form for changing your name to your married name, fill it out, then take it to the nearest office. You'll have to wait for a while, then they'll call you up and take it from there. Make sure you bring your basic paperwork, like the license, your birth certificate, your old Social Sec. card and of course your driver's license.

I got my new Social card in the mail less than a week later.

Once you get your card you can make an appointment for the DMV. Bring the same basic paperwork like your marriage license, and then you should get your new license in the mail within about 2 weeks. Mine only took about 5 days.

As far as the flights go, I had the same problem once. I just brought everything I had, all the paperwork in my name I could think of, haha, with me to the airport. I explained that I was halfway through the process of changing my name and showed them the old license, new license, marriage license, etc. Basically I overwhelmed them with papers proving that I am who I said I was and they let me on the plane!

  • One way to make travel easier- if you have a passport in your MAIDEN NAME use that instead of your DL if you are in the process of getting a new ID.

You do not have to use your DL as ID when you travel--your government issued US Passport works just as well :)

  • Did you fill out the form to have them send you a copy of your marriage license?  If you didnt, you will NOT get a copy mailed to you.

I was able to pick up a copy about a month after our wedding date.  Just stopped into the county building on my way home from work, filled out a form, handed over a check and walked out with a copy of it.

  • Thanks everyone, the passport idea is brilliant (I hadn't even considered that).
