BR: BFing diet

Do/did any of you supplement or alter your diet while breastfeeding?

My nutritionist friend recommended drinking Ensure for extra protein, vitamins, minerals, immune system strength, etc.

I'm sure I'm probably taking in enough on my own, since I'm constantly hungry and have a fridge full of healthy options, and I'm still taking the prenatal vitamin.  But I'm wondering what y'all did to make sure you were keeping baby (and yourself) healthy while BFing.  Anything extra or different than normal?

Re: BR: BFing diet

  • I'm just taking my prenatal vitamin and DHA still.  Although I must admit I'm not as good about taking it now as I was during pregnancy.  And whoever says the weight just falls off with BF didn't send the memo to my body!

  • I did not change my diet.
  • I didn't. I still took PNV (with DHA) but have been bad about that recently. :(

Haven't heard about supplementing your diet while BF besides inhaling loads of water to keep your supply up.

And whoever says the weight just falls off with BF didn't send the memo to my body!

My OB said that with her two boys, she held onto 10 pounds of her PG weight until she weaned them. .. like her body needed the extra fat to make milk.

  • no special diet - I try to eat heathy, especially veggies.  I drink SOOOOO much water.

I take a daily multi vitamin and nordic naturals fish oil.  I quit taking prenatals after birth because of the iron and the MW said that was fine but still recommended DHA/high quality fish oil.  I am not interested in the synthetic version of DHA so I take the fish oil.

I also take Vit. D and give Jack "just D" because I am always severely deficient in vit. D and it's not recommended to take the super high every couple of weeks doses that I use to take pre-pg.

Other than that I take pro-biotics and so does Jack.

  • i am having the problem of too much weight loss actually...to the point where i am concerned about my supply diminishing.  (i think i lost 34 lbs in 6 weeks?) i'm below my pre-PG weight now and am borderline underweight right now.  so, i talked to another DW nestie who is a nutritionist and she recommended adding non fat skim milk powder to anything that has milk or cream in it...so if i have a glass of chocolate milk, she said to add a few tbsp of the powder to it...or if i make a cream based soup, to add the powder. haven't tried it yet but i guess that is along the same lines as drinking the Ensure?

at this point i am just trying to consume as many calories as i can, regardless of the source.  i try to eat healthy foods but it's hard sometimes when i can just eat a burger and get a ton of calories that way.  i know that many women would love to have this "problem" but it's honestly kind of hard b/c i am hungry ALL the time and don't always have time to cook for myself.

i drink TONS of water daily, i take a prenatal vitamin with DHA and i also take extra vitamin D.

so, i'm not really on a "diet" per se, just trying to consume as many calories as possible at this point

This is me 100%!  I still have about 10-15 lbs that won't budge. I am still taking my PNV and DHA.

No fair.  I'd love an excuse to have an Oreo shake every now and then.

Boo.  I am 8-10 lbs above pre-pg weight.  Signed up for a half marathon in Dec to motivate myself to get off my butt!  I did lose a couple lbs in the last week...think I just really need to stop eating junk food and start getting healthy.

  • I am still taking my PNV + DHA and pretty much eating the way I did with GD.  I have cut out broccoli though since I've noticed that Libby is extra gassy on days when I've eaten it.  Other than that, I am just making sure to get enough protein and water each day.  And my OB recommended that I take a calcium supplement.

Just so you know, your milk is nutritious even if you don't eat well.

That said, I'd recommend eating as healthfully as possible.  I stick to organic and minimally processed food as much as I can, avoid additives like artificial sweetners, coloring and MSG and drink 2-3 liters of filtered water a day.  I aim to eat 5-7 servings of fruits and veggies, good fats (like nuts and avocados) and whole grains with lots of fiber.  I also eat a variety of seasonings and spices because I like them and also want Libby to be introduced to those tastes as well (she loves it when I eat garlic).

I'd say, be reasonable...everything in moderations and stay away from junk (at least most of the time).  I'm 20 lbs. below my pre-preg weight (still could stand to lose 60-80 lbs to be at my "ideal" high school weight though) and have lost 40 lbs. since delivering Libby.  I am pretty sure bfing has helped a lot.  I also give Libby Vitamin D daily...I found one that is 400 mL in one drop that she gets with her last feed of the day.

  • I guess I'm borderline between all of you. I started out prepregnancy with Bella 150-153. Now I weigh about 155... so I'd pretty much say I'm back to normal. Now, I didn't say it's all in the same places :) No tight toned bod here anymore!

I'm more like Jaime in that I'm hungry ALL of the time. I'm hungrier now than I was when I was pregnant with her.  I could eat a cheeseburger at 3 am if Bella's up eating. I'm starving and it's hard to eat as many calories as I need from good, healthy food and I don't always have time to cook healthy food either. I just eat when I can, what I can. I also take my prenatal. I did cut out milk initially because her belly was really sensitive. I introduced it without issues later. She was also on an infant probiotic until we ran out a month ago, we'll be starting that back up as soon as we get to whole foods to pick it up! That really helped her a lot!

Bella is going through a separation anxiety phase, teething and her first ear infection ever and does not want to be put down so that's making it even harder!

Jaime, I would say the milk powder is a good idea. Pretty much the same as Ensure, only it probably tastes better (I think Ensure isn't tasty). I found things that were good and easy were a trail mix that I made myself (which I should do again) and string cheese, quick and easy!

  • Thanks, everyone!

    This was interesting.

At this point, I'm not worried too much about my weight (zipped up my pre-pregnancy pants when Adrian was 9 days old!), just wondering how to get all the proper nutrients and all.

Like Jaime and Sarah, I'm constantly hungry, sometimes even running to the kitchen after a mid-night feeding to have a snack.  I've never felt so starved before, so I wasn't sure if that was a sign that I was missing something in my diet.  But after reading your comments, I feel reassured that we're in good shape.

Oh, and living in HI, our doctor said we're OK without the Vit D supplement,  Yay for the Hawaiian sun!

  • SO jealous of those who lost the baby weight quickly. I wasn't a skinny twig when I got pregnant but I wasn't over weight either. But losing weight HAS always been a struggle for me. I still have 15lbs of preggy weight to lose (and i only put on 25) but that mostly has to do with the fact that i am CONSTANTLY eating (and it's not always the best). My Dr. did mention that I just might be those women who lose it all when I wean.. We'll have to see

Yeah, mine are tighter than before too and my tummy skin is still not back to normal, but oh well.  Hopefully it'll improve once I can start working out again.  If not, I just look at my boy and all is well again!

    Natto... that's good diet food!
