USDA MAY ban synthetics from organic formula

someone explain to me why these were ever allowed in organic formula in the first place.

I think this explains it!!
"The Agriculture Department says it may ban two synthetic additives from organic baby formula, overturning a Bush administration decision to allow them."
The Bush administration allowed a lot of stuff and didn't follow up on all the organic dairy feedlot complaints, and definitely tended to side with big Ag and processors.
On the other hand... I'm not sure I agree. Both are fatty acids with health benefits. The additive itself, isn't necessarily synthetic.
The "problem" is that the extraction process uses a chemical not allowed in organic production. Maybe they could extract differently??
there probably is an extraction method that would qualify as organic, but i am sure it is more expensive. does formula need to cost any more than it already does?
