kiddo update

Some of you may remember that my older daughter has a developmental delay in her gross motor skills...she walked late and has low tone muscles etc...

Anywho, she has been going to physical therapy since she was 7 months old for it--she got discharged!  Woot for getting stronger--which I totally attribute to being egged on by her younger wilder sis :)

Re: kiddo update

  • I didn't know that but YAY to getting discharged! WAY to go little one!! That's awesome!
  • Oh...can I ask how you guys knew to put her in PT that early?

DH's cousin has a son who will be 2 in May and JUST started walking a few months ago and totally skipped crawling. At 1, he wasn't doing either, it was weird.. He doesn't really talk at all either, just makes noises. I'm worried about him. He had a cleft lip and they all think that he's just a little slower to do things due to that and that his father and father's brother walked late too. I disagree but it's not my place to say that.

    Thanks! :-)

  • I didn't know about that either sinc ei haven't been on here that long but that is totally awesome! what are the plans to celebrate that?

So she has torticollis and low tone (in her muscles).  We did like a million evaluations to figure it all out.  Have you ever seen those kids with helmets?  She had to wear one of those from 7 months to 10 months. She also wears orthotics in her shoes.

We even had a specialist suggest she could fall on the autism spectrum, which was frustrating bc you want help for your kid, but I wasn't crazy about the label-ya know?  Having said that, I think the ladies on her that have met her would agree that, you'd have NO idea something was wrong if you met her.

I'm all about early intervention and we're still trying to find a good Occupational Therapist for her (old one moved).

I'd be more worried about the not talking, though they say Einstein didn't talk til he was 3.  We are lucky in that she is super verbal and talked really early, but Io did baby sign language with all my kiddos.

Sorry for such a looonnnnngggg response, but I'm surprised the pediatrician hasn't suggested something?  Mine is awesome and being the internet junkie that I am, I was all over my own neurotic diagnoses :)

  • Great news Shelly!  I'm so happy!

  • I'm so happy things are turning out great for your LO! I'd love to meet your kids, they are adorable!

Yes, I've seen those helmets but never knew what they were for to be honest. Here's something not many people knwo about me....I have an older brother who is SEVERLY mentally retarded so when I see people with those helmets, I think it's to prevent them from hurting themselves. Ignorant? Maybe but that's just what I've known. My brother doesn't wear one but I've seen others in the places he's been to, that have.

Do they still think LO has Autism? That has to be so scary hearing as a parent. Have you read the Jenny McCarthy book about her and her son who has Austim? It's awesome. If you haven't, you should. She kind of "cured" his autism with what she fed him. Sounds crazy, I know but def. a good read.

And I guess their Pediatrician isn't concerned which would concern me! My brother was diagnosed around 2 because he wasn't doing the things he should have been doing. I think that's why I worry about DH's cousin's son....

  • That is fantastic news!!!  And I agree, having met her, I would have had NO IDEA that there was anything wrong..  I am so happy for you guys though!!
