great front yard plant??

we recently cut down a h-u-g-e pine tree in our front yard, which was in the middle of an approx. 6x12 planting bed that spans between our walk and driveway.  i'm not sure yet if we are going to have the stump ground down, or try to cover it in org. material and plastic and get it to compost over a few years.  in the meantime...our front yard is BALD.  thanks to that tree, nothing would grow in that bed, so it is naked.  we had a landscape plan done, but that was assuming the pine would stay.  last year we took out our starter house bushes, but haven't done anything to the beds right by the house as we want to do the siding next year and anything there would get damaged.

so.  i think i would like one or two "statement" making plants/shrubs in the outside 1/3's of this bed, and then fill in w/ lower plants and groundcover where the large tree used to be...probably not large trees as there is a crabapple on the other side of the walk and we plan for rocket junipers by the house.  i have NO. CLUE. what to plant there.  i'm in the midwest, and this is the north side of my house, so it would have to be something that likes mostly shade/indirect sun.

if you have actually managed to read this far and are totally confused by what i've said and still care to answer, i did a post about the tree takedown in my blog, and there are photos: http://efedesigns.wordpress.com/2010/04/14/a-little-spring-cleaning%E2%80%A6/

to make matters more hillbilly-ish, i hooked up my rain barrel to the downspout by the door.  it looks super classy, so the sooner i put something in the front bed, the less tacky we will hopefully look!

tia!!

  • oh yeah - the light post (see pics in post) is gone now as well - it fell over 2 days after the tree come down.  apparently they were friends.

Honestly, I'd get the stump ground first. It will take 15 years to rot out.

I'm dying to know how you reunite baby squirrels with their mother??? Do tell!

  • it was really simple, and kind of funny actually.  we called the humane society for assistance - did you know they actually have a button for squirrel?!  weird.  anyway, we were instructed to place them and what was left of the nest in a box with a baggie of warm water at the base of the next tree.  if she didn't come back by nightfall, we were to take them into the garage to keep safe from other animals.  i brought them back out at about 6:30, and they immediately started crying for food (they sounds like really loud birds!), and she came and got them!  they carry babies just like dogs!
  • 1. Get the stump gorund

    2. Contact a garden center or landscaper and have them draw up a plan. With that much space to deal with, you'll do better with someone mapping it out and giving you options on how to use your yard.
