Spring Hill Nursery Review

I just got my order of hydrangeas in today.  They actually had leaves on them!  I had previously ordered some from another online place that came as just sticks in a plastic bag.  These were actual potted plants in the same condition I could have gotten a similar sized plant for at a local nursery (if they carried what I wanted).

I'll be planting them this weekend, but for now they are on my porch getting some sun after being closed up in a box.  So far I'm impressed.

How did the cost (with shipping) compare to the sticks-in-a-box nursery?

  • The regular price for them was 3 plants for $25, but I had a coupon for $25 so I just paid the shipping of $12.95.

I previously paid $9.50 for 2 "sticks" from Direct Gardening.  Spring Hill has a better return policy in that you don't have keep all the original packaging to prove your purchase in case it dies.  They just send a replacement plant.

Unfortunately, a lot of things on the Spring Hill site don't say what form they come in.  These said 3" pot.

If they don't specify "pot" or "bulb", then they come bare root (sticks in a bag). At least they did for me.

Wow! When I worked at a retail nursery, 3" pots were $3.00, and we were about the highest priced nursery in town!

And such tiny plants- I can't imagine that I'd ever see my landscape mature. Things I planted in 1g containers are only getting up to size now, after 10 years. Sometimes the 3g size takes 10 years. Oy!

  • Nurseries around here don't carry hydrangeas for less than $25 a piece.  I've gotten one and honestly these in the 3" pot don't seem all that much smaller than the one I paid 3x as much for.

I guess we have a lot longer growing season because in 10 years you can have a good sized tree here.

  • I've ordered from Spring Hill before. My peonie is doing well, but it took time. The peonie roots my father sent me last summer are the same size as my 3 year old peonie from Spring Hill.

My strawberries from there are awesome. My blueberry bush finally has flowers 3 years after I planted them. My raspberries are thriving too.

You just have to have time when you order from spring hill since things do come pretty small.
