I'm a klutz. A few nights go, I tripped and spilled a huge cup of water all over one of our end tables, which contained almost every electronic device we own (laptop, iPhone, camera AND video camera, etc.) since that's where I sit most of the day to BF. I was able to salvage everything but the laptop, which is a total loss. I'm OK with that because it was 7-8 years old. But now I obviously need a new one.
I'm debating between getting a new PC or a Mac. I know that Macs are awesome, hardly ever get viruses, etc. But I'm still hesitant to make the transition. So, tell me about transitioning from a PC to a Mac. How hard is it? Will I have to buy a bunch of new software, too? What else would I need to know to make a decision?
Re: XP: Drowned my computer...
Growing up, I always used Macs. When we got married, my husband had a PC and I had a Mac, and we each used our own. Eventually, my poor Mac died (It was a hand me down) and I still miss it every day, though it's been well over a year. I can't tell you how many more problems his PC has! We plan to buy a Macbook soon and I can't WAIT to go back.
Just visit or call up the Apple store and an employee can best answer all those questions for you. They may have some bias, but so do we, right?
PS: Sorry your laptop died!
i've lusted over Macs for years. DH finally got me one in March
I actually haven't bought any software yet for it but need to. I need office which runs around $120 i think and i need to repurchase photoshop cause the one i have is for PC. otherwise, there's nothing else i need.
making the transition/getting used to the mac wasn't as easy as I thought it'd be. my iPhone is so intuitive, I thought the computer would be too but things like right click, etc I had to research/read the manual to figure out. at one point during the first day or two while i sorted that out, i actually thought the learning curve wasn't going to be worth it. BUT i love the thing. i love the long battery life. i love how quick it is. i love the vivid screen colors. i love that it doesn't heat up like my old PC.
love love love. i think it was worth the extra money!
In my opinion, macs last longer than your ordinary Dell or HP. A low end mac will still be 'good' three to four years from now, whereas the high-end PC will likely need hardware upgrades or be obsolete. So you may pay a little more up front, but you will get your money out of it.
I find the macs pretty intuitive, especially with the newest OS installed. I don't think I ever consulted the manual when I set up my computer.
another thing - it is REALLY nice to be able to open up the box, plug in the computer, and just go! they do all of the installations for you before they send it if you buy the software when you order the compy.
Ditto on the mac. But I am partial because that's all I've ever had since the first mac box came out back in the 80s. That being said, I also had a computer commit suicide with a glass of wine. Surprisingly an Apple guru here in town was able to save all my files.
While Im not always a fan of the Mac Store employees, I do think that macs are great!
