topsy turvy tomatoes

Has anyone tried these yet? How do you like them?

Re: topsy turvy tomatoes

  • We tried one last year and had 3 tomatoes.  Our neighbor, however, had a bumper crop.  We didn't have a great crop of anything, so I think something was off with our fertilizing/soil/compost combo.

  • We haven't tried it, but I did a lot of reading up on them because we were considering these and I found a lot of comments that they dry too quickly, the material tends to disintegrate after one season, and that the plants may get too heavy, requiring major hardware for hanging and possibly resulting in broken vines or lost plants due to lack of stability in the root system (since there isn't much room). Some people also noted that the tomatoes can rot from water dripping down onto the fruit.

Not saying they don't work, we saw good comments too, just that we didn't find them to be consistent performers. If you try it I would stick to smaller, lighter varieties and use a pipe with holes or other watering device to slowly deliver water on hot days. You can also make an upside down planter yourself that would last longer - there's lot of plans on the internet.

  • My parents have one and they've have really good luck with it. Like any potted plant, you have to water it almost everyday, but I've heard a lot of people have success with them. They also have topsy turby with cherry tomatoes, which I've thought about getting, because my tomato plants aren't looking so good.
  • I had them for a few years when I had a patio, but no yard.  PP is right, those suckers get heavy!  I had pretty good luck with mine though - lots of tomatoes, and they grew all the way to the ground.
