unemployment question

I know some of you and some of your husbands have used unemployment due to circumstances.  Can anyone point me to a good website that details how long one can draw unemployment?  There are so many extensions that it's all so confusing and what I've googled has not helped.

Basically James starting collecting unemployment 4/2009 or 5/2009, I'd have to check.  Here we sit a year later and still no job, though he was laid off 1/2009.  I'm freaking out it will run out.

Also, if anyone knows anyone hiring (for anything at this point)  could you let me know.  Kudos to you if it's an IT position.  Thanks ladies.

Re: unemployment question

  • DH has yet to find anything that documents extensions in Oregon.  He has been told 99 weeks total to collect UI, though.  He's been on since Dec  2008.

Good luck to James on the job hunt.  DH is having a VERY difficult time finding anything.  And he's applying for lower-level, low paying jobs and still nothing.  It's very frustrating.

  • I'm not sure. DH was unemployed since August and then in Feb his unemployment ran out and they didn't notify him but he just had to file for the extension which would have taken him through July. I think he could have had another extension then but we never got there as he just got a job this month.

Good luck to James, I hope he finds something soon. Have him check out WebMD. A friend of mine works there and it seems they're often hiring. They're in NW Portland near Vaughn.

  • I'm not sure, as the last time I claimed UE was summer of 2008.

I just wanted to say, I'm sorry you guys are going through this, and have faith that he will get something eventually.  If you call the UE information line, they will be able to answer your questions and direct you to the right info.

  • I'm no expert so don't quote me but I believe that unemployment benefits are determined by how long you've worked and paid into the system -- I know that's how the amount is determined (if you're salary was $50k, you'd be eligible for more than if your salary is $25k for instance)

Unfortunately if you do call, they can't give you any more information than the current program you're on, and *possibly* the next benefit you qualify for.  They can not list which programs you will be elegible for in the future, or for how long your total benefits will last.  Angry

It's infuriating, I know.  Neil and I have been going round and round with UE for over a year now.  But, there is extension after extension available since our UE rate is so high and the government has made available many different programs.  So James will be able to collect for probably another 4 - 6 months, at least.

Also, is he going to school, or want to go to school?  OR UE has a program where if he wants to go to school, as long as he has an estimated "completion" date within the next year or so - ie. Masters program, trade school, etc. - they will pay him a continuation of benefits while he goes to school full time.  Just an idea.

Again, good luck!  I know how frustrating it is, we've been living this nightmare for over a year now.  Feel free to call me if you have any more questions.  Unfortunately I've had to become fairly well-versed with this whole UE thing so I don't have a panic attack. Wink
