Would you/do you have upholstered dining chairs? And a PIP

I fell in love with a set from Horchow that is way out of my budget..

Then  I just found this from Ashley furniture...

So, my question is, am I nuts for wanting upholstered dining chairs? We don't have any kids, but still peope can me messy . If you have them do you put chair covers on them when you have company? Also not sure if they even make chair covers that would fit this style chair. Pics if you have them please!

  • I think they're pretty. There also fine for a rarely used formal dining room. My mom has upholstered chairs in her formal dining room and they still look good, but we also weren't hardly allowed to walk in the DR either..lol. :)

Is it for me however, probably not. Love it in theory but they'd stress me out everytime I had guests I don't have the energy to worry about spills etc.

  • They're beautiful. I'd consider them for a seldom-used formal dining room, especially if I had a chance to talk to the manufacturer about how to clean them and remove stains.
  • We have them in the DR, but we also have an eat-in-kitchen with wood chairs, so they don't get used daily.

I think someone posted a pic recently from West Elm that had chairs similar to your second pic.  I like that style, but haven't seen covers for them.

We have your basic parsons chairs, PIB.  I'm thinking about getting a non-matching head chair now that we have a larger table.

  • We have them in our formal dinning room (light colored microfiber) and we use our dinning room 4 times per week and haven't had any issues.

Just a thought... we purchased the stain protection policy from Ashley's for cheap (maybe $125??) and it covers any man made spills etc. the $125 was worth the piece of mind, knowing that if we did have a spill they would come out and clean it or replace it for $0.

  • I think they're pretty and love the fabric; however I'm not a fan of all upholstered DR chairs.  I find them to be a little too "formal" for my taste and prefer them mostly wood with some upholstery on them.  I'd also be concerned about spills and them getting ruined (even with adults...I can be quite the messy eater myself)!
  • DD is a mess at the table right now and we have upholstered chairs.

Just keep some oxyclean or a hand held steam cleaner of some sort (like the Little Green) handy and you'll be fine. So far i've been able to get everything out except for some red jello but the spots are so faint now you can barely tell. lol

  • I have upholstered chairs and I love them.  I've got them Scotchguarded and they're still going strong after three years.

  • That is gorgeous.  Your dilemma reminds me of when I was going to buy a microfiber couch even though I'd have a sheet on it unless company was over to protect it from the baby/animals.

I'd do it in a second.

  • I think I would avoid that much upholstery in a dining room, especially white, and especially in a DR that sees as much use as ours does.  I plan to reupholster the seats of our DR chairs, but only the seats - not the backs and edges like those.
  • My Stepmonster had/has white upholstered dining room set with a glass table -totally gaudy and totally not kid friendly. Needless to say when we were there for sunday dinners I had to have my seat covered in dishtowels as well as one tucked into my shirt like a bib and one across my lap & be pushed in to the table to prevent me from ruining her stuff. I like the look but I would totally be paranoid and have contemplated if its worth it for our new house. My ILs dont watch the nieces/nephews and I can only imagine what they would look like after a visit from Hs family.

If I do go upholstered I would do a dark navy fabric to help hide most common marks

  • Check WestElm - they have some similar ones and are pretty moderately priced.

Our formal DR chairs have an upholstered seat that I scotchguarded when I reupholstered them. Since we rarely use the room, it works okay. I'm not sure I'd put them in our breakfast nook.

  • I have some from room & board but they are microfiber and pretty easy to clean.  My DS isn't old enough to sit on them yet (still in a highchair) but when he is, I'll probably cover his chair to keep it clean.  I'm not too worried about the other chairs....occasional spills can be cleaned.

  • What is the name of the dining set from Ashley?

The set is called Oliver, but considering that this post is from 2010 and the set is no longer listed on their website, you should assume that it has been long discontinued.
  • Yes, we got ours from Pottery Barn (English Roll Arm), would fully recommend them. They can be somewhat of a chore to maintain especially with kids but they look great, are very comfortable and aren't cold like a leather couch is when you first lie on it.
  • This is exactly what I was thinking about getting! There are tons of great chairs on Amazon. I do think they'd be so much more comfortable than just wood. They make the dining room look so much classier too.
