Zoo tips/tricks?
My husband and I are hoping to come down either Sat/Sun/Mon to take our daughters to the zoo.
I'm looking for tips and tricks, hints, suggestions, "Go here...but not here" type stuff.

There is a zoo pass you can buy for like $10 per person (zoo itself is free), but the pass gets you into the children's area (you can pet goats), on the train (for as many rides as you like) and the carosel (for as many rides as you like).
If you go early enough you can find free parking, but it fills up quickly. If you don't get there right when it opens I suggest just paying to park or else you'll be walking quite a ways to your car.
All the exhibits are great. Note the penguin/puffin building is freezing. We went in and shot right through b/c it was so cold.
I can't remember if you can bring your own food in. If you can't, you can always do a picnic lunch in Forest Park if you don't want to pay for food in the zoo (which is really expensive).
Oh and they don't allow lids or straws on sodas that they sell, so you may want to make sure you have sippy cups for the kids.

Probably the best advice that I can give is to park at the art museum and walk to the zoo. It's all of a 4 minute walk to the gate and saves you on the parking. I personally wouldn't spend the money on the kids section of the zoo (I can't seem to remember the name off the top of my head), its a lot smaller than you would hope and they seem to be lowering the amount of hands on in the section. Plus my friends' daughter, who I've taken there dozens of times would rather spend an hour in Puffin Coast (where the penguins and puffins are) than ten minutes in the kids secion (she's 3).
If the kids are up to it and you are, I would definately paddle boat the grand basin. It's one of the most under-rated parts of the park (in my opinion) and you can get their by either driving to the Boat House or walking down Art Hill from the art museum's parking lot.
But whatever you end up doing, have fun! It's the best free zoo in country!

lots of good info. Get there early (when it opens) and you shouldn't have any problems finding parking on the southside on the street. The first hour they are open there are some free things to do... Dinoroarus, Children's Zoo, and the Carousel. My son loves the train ride but it is dissapointing (to me) that you really don't get to see that much.
