I just moved to Iowa City. I'm in grad school at the University of Iowa and my fianc? works in Muscatine. I'm just looking for fun things to do in either the Iowa City or Quad Cities area. We've been checking out a few restaurents, bars, and recreations areas but we're always looking for something new to do.
Re: New in Iowa
Welcome!!! We are in the Peoria, IL area, but come back to the QC often due to family.
Sorry about the Hawkeye thing There should be a ton of things to do with the university there though... not that I would dare do more than speed through town on the interstate. Stick around and come back often! More people the merrier!
One of the things that I did that helped get me a bit more "settled" (not sure that's what you are looking for, depending what your plans are after grad school) is that I joined the Junior League. I was able to figure out alot more social stuff once I had some people to talk with! There is a group in Cedar Rapids and the QC.
Also with summer coming and the good weather, we often go to state parks to get out and away. DH & I have enjoyed making trips to go to the drive-in in Maquoketa (not sure I spelled that right). Then there is always the boat in Riverside for the trekkies!!!
//Getting off my lame box
Welcome! I'm actually down in Decatur, IL near Springfield, but there's really no other place for me, so I hang out here.
Hitched -- I'm jealous that you have a Junior League. I looked to see if there was one here [I'm bored and need more friends] and there isn't
Yeah I know mah... there is one in Springfield though. I am suprised that Bloomington/Normal doesn't have one.
I also looked into the Newcomer's Club when I first moved, but it wasn't a good match... either you were a SAHM with 3 kids, or age 55+. What about us 20-somethings that are in the pre-kid phase that work during the day? I didn't have the energy to do a whole lot there.
Another thing to look into, the Jaycees. I don't have time to join them, but I've heard alot of good things about them... social opportunities and volunteer opportunities.
