since you live in london and have access to a lot of excellent cuisines there, i'd choose something that is harder to find there (or at least not done as well by the brits)
some of my personal favorites
cuban - cafe habana (don't miss the grilled corn with cheese, chili, and lime)
BBQ - dinosaur bbq (this is in harlem but worth the trip for their awesome food and homemade root beer on tap)
creole/cajun - delta grill (this is my husband's favorite jambalaya)
american/comfort food - chat'n'chew (the fried chicken drizzled with honey is so, so good)
