Orchid question

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this board so forgive me if this was asked. I tried to scroll to see if I was reposting something recently asked.

I received an orchid for my birthday. It bloomed beautifully in the house in indirect sunlight. I was wondering if I could transport it outside safely? I live in NY in zone 6. I tried to research this but I cannot seem to find accurate info. Can I plant it? Or just put the pot outside in indirect sunlight?

Thanks!

do not plant it outside. you can keep it potted outside, but if it's a phalenopsis, it can't tolerate temps under 50.  and it will probably need to be in an area with full shade.

most of my orchids are in a well draining, inorganic mix in hanging baskets.  they live in full shade, and the sprinklers water it briefly each morning.  if it's in something like spagnum moss, it will probably only need to be watered twice a week outside, or the roots will rot.

  • never, never, never plant an orchid outside if you live anywhere other than a tropical paradise.  And never plant it regular soil.  like the other poster said, you need to keep it in what it's planted in, or buy orchid bark if you're transplanting it.

Now you can set it outide if you have an area that gets indirect light.  Keep it in the pot. It loves humid, warm air. But whatever you do, do not put in the ground or black potting soil.

Orchids are air plants. Their roots need to breathe. And don't over water. About 2 ice cubes worth of water is all you need to give them once a week.

Just leave it be if it stopped blooming. Put it in a window that gets nice indirect light and water it once a week. (if it's outside you'll have to water it more) Do not drench it - two ice cubes. Let it be.  It may take a month or two, but it will put out shoots again and bloom again.

I suggest you research orchids. They aren't too hard to grow if you understand the basics, but they are easy to kill if you don't do your research and understand what makes them bloom and grow.

     Good luck.
