BR: Help me furnish the nursery

The baby's room is fairly small. One whole wall is taken up by the closet (GREAT for storage... not so great for furniture arrangement). Another wall is half taken up by a window. So far, we've got the crib and dresser in there (and we'll also get a clothes hamper to go next to the dresser). We essentially have room for one more mid-sized piece of furniture/baby gear item. I originally really wanted to get a cute toy chest because we live in a two-bedroom condo, so anything that is cute and also serves as storage gets an A+ in my book. But after looking around quite a bit, we're having a hard time finding anything we like that isn't a safety hazard for a young baby or plastic.

SO, I'm hoping for suggestions, especially from the moms. What do you think is a must-have item in the room? We're considering either 1. keep looking for a toy chest, 2. bookshelf, or 3. glider. We already have a rocking chair in our living room, so we could probably get by without a glider (unless you think it's super important to have one in the baby's room?). Any other suggestions?

TIA!

Re: BR: Help me furnish the nursery

  • honestly we live in a 2bd/2ba place.

In her room there is also my DH's computer, file cabinet and a spare double bed.

So she has a dresser, crib and we have a glider (which she doesn't like, and never really has) so we will likely get rid of that.

In her bathroom we have the changing pad/ diaper bag/diapers (we cloth diaper) and we have a hanging clothes bag for her dirty clothes.

My thought is maybe go to target and get one of the square shelves that has multiple squares in it that you can get the little 10 x 10 x 10 (ish) cloth blocks that you can fill with stuff, it will be multipurpose and you can use it as LO gets older as well

like this below it will show the fabric bins, and there are different shapes you can get as far as the shelving. You can bolt it to the wall so you dont have to worry about LO pulling it over

  • We are in a one bedroom. So in our room we have our bed, his crib, two nightstands, a tv stand,  a changing table and his bassinet (which has a toy chest under it, and the top is now used for his clothes). It's arranged perfectly for maximum space. We have storage in the changing table as well, which is great for things used every day. We never did get a rocking chair/glider...didn't have the space and didn't really want it anyway. When we shopped and did the registry, we really went for things that were convertible and could be used for a long time. The crib changes into a toddle bed, the changing table can be used for storage when he gets too big, and like I said that bassinet is a toy chest. I am a master of searching for stuff, so if you have something specific in mind let me know and I will be able to find it for you! lol
  • I don't think a glider is a necessity. I didn't have one and don't feel like I lost out.  How about something like this? http://www.target.com/BASICS-HOME-Tribeca-Bookcase-Espresso/dp/B001TREQRQ/ref=br_1_25?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&qid=1272646985&searchView=grid5&sr=1-25&node=13814371&searchRank=pmrank&searchPage=1&searchSize=150&id=BASICS HOME Tribeca Bookcase Espresso&searchBinNameList=purchasing_channel,subjectbin,target_com_age,target_com_gender-bin,target_com_character-bin,price,target_com_primary_color-bin,target_com_size-bin,target_com_brand-bin

I bought something like this because the baby's room is fairly small also and it helps with storage AND it can be used as a bookshelf. The one I bought has 9 areas and I bought 6 baskets. So 3 are used for books and the other 6 for storage.

We actually bought that exact shelving thing (only with 6 holes instead of 9), and we got some of those fabric boxes to go in three of the holes. We put it in his closet for now, which is pretty big, to use for additional storage of blankets and bibs and such. But we could always pull that out and put it in his room, instead, and have more storage space in the closet.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, ladies! I'm definitely thinking a glider isn't necessary now.

  • Agreed on a bookcase/storage type solution--ikea/target/goodwill all good choices imo.

It seems like as they grow their toys get bigger--we have a doll house, 2 castles. airplane, boat, parking garage-etc--these take up a lot of real estate in their rooms and it makes me nuts :)  Something you could maybe put bigger things on top of with baskets for the little things etc?

We have a glider and dh uses it a lot for putting the girls down/singing now.  I used it more for dd1 for nursing etc.  dd2 I nursed in bed--soooo much better.

Did you paint the room?  I heart color :)

We're actually not going to paint the room (it's just sort of a neutral beige), but we got a really colorful alphabet collage to hang up and it has lots of reds, blues and yellows in it, so that's serving as inspiration for the rest of the room. We got a navy blue rug, and my aunt is going to paint block letters of his name in those primary colors, so hopefully it all comes together and looks cute when we're done!

  • I have to agree; we have a glider in the nursery, and we could have lived without it.  I have twins, and I never could put one down and rock the other one in the same room anyway.  And I often wished the glider was in the living room, so I could have watched t.v., etc...

I do have to say that I value the changing table.  Changing diapers on the floor, bed, couch etc will start causing a back ache pretty quickly.

I really like these!!! We have a chair in D's room, and we use it for bedtime stories at night. This could easily be done in the living room or another room though.

We have a dresser, and then a changing table/3 drawer dresser. Once he doesn't need to changing table anymore pieces can be removed so it's a regular dresser. Our house is really small (2b/2ba) so we pretty much only use the changing table to change him. I know many people that can do without the changing table also

  • The dresser we bought is a good height to also use as a changing table (with one of those changing pads), so that's our plan for that.

Speaking of changing... for the ladies who have cloth diapered (which we plan to do), what did you do with the dirty diapers between washes? Did you use a regular diaper pail or some kind of sealable bags?

Seems like there's so much to think about, haha. Thanks for all the ideas!  :)

  • I have a planetwise wetbag hanging on the door. If I had more room I'd probably just do a pail with a liner. I've thought about putting it under the bathroom sink but that would be kind of a pain most of the time.

  • we use a planet wise wetbag like this

Then at target we bought an over the door towel hook that it hangs from (DH didn't like the idea of it hanging from the handle, he thought it might be too heavy)

We keep our diapers in one of the cloth blocks that I was talking about from above.

ETA: I dont' think I'd get a pail after having this, it has enough room for 2+ days diapers, I can take it with us when we travel and it takes up less room Yes

Hanging it from the door is a great idea -- then it's kind of hidden and out of the way, but still easily accessible. Does it do a good job of containing the stink?

  • Well we actually usually just leave it open. If you plan to breastfeed LO's poop shouldn't really have a smell until LO starts solids.

Though DD's is starting to have a little smell but I think  it is because we give her probiotics. When it is zipped it doesn't smell at all!

We just put some pail deoderizer in there (baking soda + some essential oils) that I got from Crunchy clean when it's open. Oh and you can just throw it in with your diapers every few days to wash it Yes

    Awesome!  Thanks so much.  :)

  • This is the one I have

Like pp said, it's great for travel. I wash every 3 or 4 days, so mine gets a teeny bit stinky towards the end of that. Usually if you're not going to wash every few days, you'd just want to have a pail with a liner. But I'm still happy with my bag. You can't smell it unless you purposely go up to it and take a whiff
