iphone / i touch

any know if I can turn off the phone part of the iphone and just use it as a touch?

I am hating the iphone part and would rather get something like damn crackberry, but I don't want to lose all the ipod features, etc.

possible?

Re: iphone / i touch

  • yes, set it to airplane mode. (under settings)

however, what about the phone part do you not like? the dropping of  calls?

  • You can put it into airplane mode to not use the cell phone service.

  • Exactly what the pp's said. Just keep in mind of course that you won't have access to the 3G network, only wifi :)
  • RE: the 3G network...

my iphone was dropping calls like crazy. as in, i'd move six inches to the right and lose the call. it was to the point where i was going to get rid of my phone.

told my cousin, who works for at&t, and she suggested turning off 3G. i was wary because i was afraid the phone wouldn't work as well. when you turn off 3G, it switches to at&t's other network, edge. edge is what other at&t phones use, like blackberry. so you know it does work.

well...when i turned off 3G, not only have i not dropped one call since, all my apps and run faster, and my internet works just as fast.

so, if that's your prob with the phone, try it. if you don't like it (you will!) you can always turn it back on.

note: i did get a note that i dropped a call once - but it turned out it was my friend with whom i was talking. she switched off 3G and hasnt dropped a call since, either.

i'm tellin ya, it changed my life! i guess at&t employees can't go aruond saying "if youre having problems, turn off our wonderful, highly advertised 3G network, and you're fine."

    good luck!

I wish I'd known this before I switched from AT&T to Verizon, ended up getting the droid (and I miss my iphone)

  • i know! my H was the same way. we got the iphones and loved everything about them, except the dropping calls. i dont really talk much on mine...but he uses it for work and it was imperative for him to have a working phone. so he got rid of it and got a blackberry. like a week later i found out about the 3G, and he was not happy. he's going to get a used iphone on ebay or something because i'm so happy with mine now.

  • Airplane mode will also turn off the Wi-fi capabilities.

Apple has a support article on how to convert an iPhone to use as an iPod Touch after you disable cell service and still be able t use Wi-fi.

  • Thanks Ladies.  I will look into all of the information you provided.

It's droppping calls left and right which is just ticking me off to no end.  Plus it's slow as moleasses on apps, phone, etc.    I know that's its probably getting full and I need to delete all the pictures...

I am waiting patiently to decide what I am going to do, switch to Blackberry and use the iphone as an itouch, and then eventually get myself an ipad.

if your problem is  slow aps and dropping calls, turn off 3G. i promise you will immediately see a difference, and you will be so happy you did! even if you switch to BB, you'll at least have a working phone in the meantime.
