Update

Hey girls,

Thanks so much for thinking of me and for all the well-wishes.  I really appreciate it.  Since I've heard from so many of you I thought I'd come on here and give you girls the details.  Yes, I was in an accident last Friday.  I was stopped at a red light near Narcoossee and 528 and the person behind me didn't break.   I actually saw that she was coming up on me pretty fast in the rear-view mirror but it was too late to do anything about it.  She hit me,  spun me around to and sent me into the median.  There was no squealing tires and no skid marks.  Also, fter she hit me, she continued into the median, ran over a tree and finally stopped in some bushes in the median. So, I really don't think she ever hit the brakes.  It was very scary and I was pretty shaken up.  The first thing I could think of was I can't believe this is happening again, and I hope the person who hit me doesn't get away again.

I was very lucky that I wasn't hurt, just sore and shaken up.  I was also lucky to have some wonderful girls who were complete strangers stop to help me, give me a hug and ask what they could do for me.  The process afterward has been a little bit of a nightmare.  The other lady's insurance won't pay for anything for me (the repairs, the rental car, etc) until they can speak to her.  It doesn't matter that she was cited by the police as "at fault" for the accident.  Of course, it's been almost a week and they cannot contact her and she isn't returning their calls.  Fun for me.  So for now, my deductible and the rental car are all on me and I'm just hoping to get reimbursed.

This hasn't been fun.  This is my second accident in 6 months (the first was a hit and run back in March) and I had just bought my car in April, which I absolutely loved.  And of course it's a hassle not to have a car, to constant be on the phone with the repair shop and the insurance company and to drive around in a stinky rental just so I can get to work and worrying that I won't ever get reimbursed.   But in some ways I feel so luckyA  after 2 bad accidents this year, I walked away from both.   I really can't ask for more.

I also heard about Star and Roger's accident on the same day as mine.  When I heard about it, I kinda got chills.  I was truly hoping everything would be okay for them.  Unfortunately it has not turned out that way and my heart is breaking for Start and their family.  I can't imagine what she is going through and I admire her strength.

Anyway, sorry for the long post.  But I felt like you girls deserved to hear from me after all the messages and well-wishes I've gotten from you.  I'm okay, just frustrated and shaken up.  It's sweet of you girls to worry, though.  Thanks for everything.

~Layne

Re: Update

  • I'm so glad to hear you are okay... Take good care of yourself and I hope the car insurance issues are worked out soon.

  • OMG, I never want anyone I love to drive again. DH had a drunk driver come inches away from T-boning him a week ago, and he watched him drive into a freaking house (and called 911 and stopped him from getting away when he EFFING backed out of the house, grabbed his bumper and threw it in the trunk, and tried to back into the street! UGH!).

Our roads are crazy dangerous- I am so glad you're okay, Layne, but, so sad that you have to through ALL this sh!t again, at no fault of your own. Our insurance system really sucks. Really, really. Hugs. :(

  • I completely understand the shaken up part. I was in in 3 accidents in 6 weeks (none my fault) back in 2006 and it left me VERY shaken up. Take some time to yourself and treat yourself well.
  • Glad you are ok!

Shouldn't your car insurance cover the expense of a rental until her insurance reimburses yours. That is how it worked when my car got totaled. Hope it works out for ya.

  • Very glad to hear you are doing ok. I am so sorry that this is happening to you. The great news is that you are in one piece! Stay safe and take care of yourself.
  • I'm with Chris - I don't want anyone driving anymore!  I'm so glad you are ok.

That stinks about your insurance, or her insurance I guess.  I wonder why they have that rule?  What happens if she never returns their calls?  It doesn't seem right that they won't reimburse you then.

I hope you have some time to relax and treat yourself to something to make you feel better.  Be safe!

  • I'm so glad you are ok and thanks for coming here to update us.  You certainly have a guardian angel, that's for sure.  Please let me know if (while you are in Melbourne working) there is anything I can do.
  • Layne glad to know you're ok.  That intersection is so dangerous!  Not only is it a bottleneck that makes traffic every morning and afternoon but the construction doesn't make it any better.  Just give God thanks you're alive and all in one piece.  Glad to hear the update.
  • Layne, I am really glad to hear you are OK!  Your accident sounded so scary!

I am gonna message you on myspace regarding the insurance issues.

  • Cmeon - That's exactly how I feel. I'm so sick of Orlando roads and Orlando drivers.  I feel like I never wanna to get into a car again . . .which is not a good way to feel when you have a 125-mile roundtrip commute to work.  Ugh.

DMC - I didn't have rental car coverage on my policy (I do now), so my policy wouldn't cover a rental car in the interum.  Also, we have the same insurance company.  Anyway, I was told I'd have to rent it onmy own dime and IF they determine she's liable, THEN they'd reimburse me.

MCP - Again, we have the same insurance company.  Some poeple I've talked to seem to think that's why I'm having these issues.  I asked the same questions about what happens if she never returns their calls?  They said after 30 days if they haven't heard from her, they'll make a judgement on their own based on the police documents.  But that seems likea long time to make the not-at-fault party wait for their money back.

MrsM - Ever since we've moved to this area, my husband has commented about how dangerous that street is there where it narrows.  And I've totally agreed.  And the back-up it causes every morning is awful.  I do my best to avoid that route at all costs and try to take 417 everywhere.

Thanks again girls for all the thoughts and good vibes.  You all are so sweet and such a good group.  :-)

  • Its just crazy but I have chills right now :( I am very glad you are okay. It just sucks that this lady is now avoiding the insurance company. Good Luck
