My chorus

Munkii asked about my chorus...so I thought I'd share it with everyone.  I thought about it a while back when y'all were talking about friendships being difficult to find in a new place and a new marriage.

For 23 years, I've belonged to Sweet Adelines International.  It is an organization across the US and in a bunch of foreign countries.  We sing women's four part acapella harmony.  But it's not just like choir, we also do choreography.  It's sort of like Glee with all women and no band :)  The great thing is that you don't have to be a major solo singing talent...the object is to make all the voices blend into one sound.  I love the feeling.  I love putting my voice into the mix and and hearing the harmonies ring.  I love performing for an audience!

We have women who are members who range in age from 15 to 80.  There are housewives, teachers, business people, doctors, single, married, children and not.  We have women of every race, background, education and economic level.  We sing all kinds of music, contemporary, gospel, but mostly concentrated in show tunes and music from the forties and fifties.

The best part is the relationships.  I've moved every 2-5 years for my entire marriage.  Since I joined SAI, I have always had a place to go. I move to a new place, unpack my boxes, and on the next week I go to rehearsal and have a whole new group of people who are thrilled to see me.  When things have gone wrong, they are the people who are there with help, food, whatever I have needed.  They are my friends, and my sisters.  I cannot imagine what it would be like without them.

So, that's the story.  some people run, knit, do crafts, bowl, or play golf.  I sing.  It's where I walk in the door and leave everything else behind.  It's where I am no ones wife, mother, daughter, employee...people like me just because I'm me!

If you'd like to check it out, go to www.sweetadelineintl.org, or you can check out my personal chorus at www.grcsings.com.  On our chorus website, if you click on quartets, I'm in the one called ...breaking news...

Thanks for asking!

My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!

Re: My chorus

  • That's great!  I'm glad you are apart of something so important and special.  My Aunt (who sang in our wedding) is very involved in her church choir, it may even be something like your group I think.  Hmmm...I'll have to ask her.
  • That's awesome!  Your group sounds wonderful, and this info is great to have.  There was someone on my local the other day talking about how she needs to make friends but is having trouble.  I think I'll point her in this direction.
    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • What a great story and wonderful group! Thank you for sharing :). One of the things I miss most about living in a small town is that community feel and activities, here in the big city I'm just another face in the crowd. Seems like this group could give me a bit of that small-town connection again. I'm going to check it out!
