Got a 2nd interview

...but I don't know that I want it.  It's with the company that I mentioned before...worked for them for about 3 weeks 3 years ago.  I'll go for the interview but if I get the job I might turn it down.  Unless they pull some money from somewhere it would be about a $5K pay cut which I just don't want to do.  Unemployed or not, I can't take a job that would have me making less than I do now.

Re: Got a 2nd interview

  • Well, first off CONGRATS on getting a 2nd interview! If nothing else it should reassure you that you are definitely a desirable candidate for this type of job!  :)

Thinking about the $5k pay cut-- maybe work out for yourself how long your unemployment would have to be to make it "worth it" to take the job. E.g. if you make $5k a month, then if you were unemployed for more than a month, you would have been better off (financially speaking) taking the job with the pay cut. Then consider what you think your chances are of being employed before that magic window closes.

Of course, there is so much more to a job than just pay, so all the other things (advancement opportunities, bonuses, benefits, etc) would have to be attractive about the pay-cut-job. Any chance you could get them to agree to give you that extra $5k in a signing bonus, with an agreement that it will be added to your regular salary in one year if you meet/exceed their expectations? Hmmm...

    Good luck with the interview!

  • You both make good points.  I wasn't going to turn down the interview I was just a bit hesitant.  But, they do know the salary I was looking for so perhaps they found a little extra money to bump up their starting pay.  Also, they emailed me their insurance info so I'm going to send that to my RE today to find out what fertility treatment is covered.  A $5K drop in pay but insurance that covers IVF might be worth it.
