Megazoom digicams casting a lens shadow?

Anyone have a reference for this or has experienced this?

I'm interested in getting a 14x zoom camera (specifically the Canon SX210) and have seen posts about the above but am not sure how much of a problem/ issue this poses. It seems to happen when the subject of interest is dimly lit (thus need for a flash), subject is rather close and zoom lens is extended.

What I'd like to know is why would the zoom lens need to be extended for a subject that is close up? Or rather; wouldn't the zoom lens need be extended if you are at a great distance from the subject such that if it is dimly lit and flash is needed then the lens shadow would not be of concern?

Just throwing this out there to see if anyone has any insight on this issue.

 Thank you.
