A ? for the Moms

Have any of you ever used Karo syrup for constipation in your baby?  If so how long until the babe had a poo?  My doc recommened it yesterday and we put a tbsp in his bottle last night thinking, he have a b/m this am when he awoke, but nothing so far...so I put another tbsp in his last bottle, still nada...how long can I keep doing this?  I guess I can call my doc, but just wondering if anyone has any experience with this...I am not overly worried b/c he did have a b/m yesterday afternoon, but it was small and hard, so I am sure he's got more in there LOL.  Just curious!

  • Hi Crissy!  Hope you are doing well.  I am sorry I don't have any advice b/c I have never used it.  Luckily no constipation issues here, Ryan goes 2-3 times a day, at least!  Jack is so cute and even though I have never met you, he really looks like you from the pictures of you.  I hope you're having fun with him!
  • Hi Crissy- see I was back on this board for a reason.

I used to have to do this for Madison.  I can't remember how much I added (1 tsp or 1 tbsp) - but I did add it to a bottle a day for her (per her pedi).  We finally stopped doing it once she really started table food.  She used to have bm issues all the time.  Things like that don't tend to "fix" things overnight.  I would give it like 2 more days.  If you are concerened or if Jack's abdomen is hard- they do sell children's laxative drops (made from vegetables) so baby safe.  Those did used to work fairly fast.

  • Never used Karo Syrup, but after surgeries my kids would sometimes have constipation problems due to anesthesia and I used to put an ounce of prune juice into their bottles and that did the trick.  See what your doctor thinks of doing that.
  • Owen has had lots of constipation problems.  However, his pedi never suggested the karo syrup.  Their first recommendation was prune juice (diluted of course).  O refused to drink that (who can blame him?) so they next recommended any white juice (pear, white grape, apple etc).  He would drink that, but still wasn't a huge fan.  What we ended up doing was adding a little bit of extra water & a little bit of juice to each bottle of formula.

Whatever you use probably won't work overnight.  Owen is about to start his 3rd "Rx" for constipation & they have all said that they may take 2-3 days to take effect.

It sounds like you already know, but in a baby it really isn't how often they go but what the stool is like when they do go.  O often goes 4-6 times/ day, but his stool is still very hard & formed.  As his pedi used to say "rabbit poop" is constipation in babies.

Hope little Jack feels better soon, it is no fun!

ETA:  If you can, give it to him in the morning.  That way his digestive system is awake & working & you will see results sooner (& during the day).  Both Owen's pedi, GI & my GI recommend this w/ any type of laxative.

  • Yeah my doc told us either Karo syrup or Pear juice(no other juice though for whatever reason) but DH couldn't find pear juice so we did the corn syrup.  He still hasn't gone yet, but then again I didn't know to give it during the day(thanks for the tip Mindy), so maybe last night's dose was futile...I did give him some this am too, so we shall see what tmw brings.  I'm not too worried b/c he did go yesterday just solid and boy was he straining(never had this problem b4)  but I remembered his doc telling me that we would need to treat him if it had been greater than 5 days with no b/m or hard poops, so ironically on the 6th day he did poo, but again it was not his normal pasty fun stuff hehe.  Thanks for the tips ladies!
  • We have done the diluted pear juice

    Good luck!
