Tomato Yield

Does anybody know how many pounds of tomatoes I can expect from one tomato plant? Isn't there some kind of a table that tells you this?

I would also be interested to get this info for peppers and snap peas.

I think I went little overboard with tomatoes. I think I'm at about 25 plants right now and my husband told me I needed an intervention when I decided to plant 2 tomato plants in each of my flower beds-in the front yard. Yes, that's right! I went there. There is so many plants and not enough space....Big SmileWink

Re: Tomato Yield

  • Yield is going to vary by variety as well as site conditions.

For tomatoes,I would estimate 2 plants/person in your household (average consumption).  Maybe 3-4 plants/person if you are going to want to can or otherwise put up.  We are growing 6 plants (2 cherry, 4 varieties suitable for canning or slicing) for the 2 of us.

I haven't had good luck with bell/sweet peppers personally and never grew snap peas so I can't help you there.

Yield depends a lot on the specific variety of tomato.  And on your growing season and conditions. I know I usually have 10-15 tomato plants, but I plant heirlooms, which have lower yields anyway, and I am in the high desert and get lower yields due to shorter growing season and arid conditions.  I know my plants provide me with plenty of tomatoes for eating, canning and trading from July-September.

Bell peppers I usally get 2-3 peppers per week in July & August.

  • We planted bell peppers and got 3 peppers from each plant for the season.  Our plants didn't grow very large and got sun for about 5-6 hours per day.

Tomatoes are sometimes unpredictable in my area.  Three years ago we we couldn't give them away fast enough.  Last year we barely had enough for a salad, which was common in our area due to strange weather conditions.  This year we are hoping for a better crop and back to the average 3 per plant per week.  Cherry varieties tend to have more fruits but a lower weight per plant.

Asking at your local garden center might be best for getting a feeling for your region.

ETA: We planted snap peas a few years ago and had enough for salads but not enough to share.  I believe we had about 4 plants.

  • I agree that they are very unpredictable.

I had a coworker that had oodles of tomatoes from only three plants. She brought in bags and bags to share with us.

The following year, I planted three plants. I barely got enough for my own consumption, let alone to share with anyone. In fact, I did not share with anyone. I ate them all myself. It was a cold summer though. There was also some sort of tomato disease running around the area. My plants didn't get the disease, but no one had many tomatoes from what I understand.

This year, I have 10 plants. I am hoping to eat lots and lots of tomatoes, and perhaps even make some marinara sauce out of them.

we did ten tomato plants last year, all heirlooms and hybrids, and had tomatoes out the wazoo... you're gonna be buried in them!  i can't believe there's anyone who's more overboard about tomatoes than my husband.
