XP from TK - Relocation Info
Hi Ladies! I'm a CT Nestie. I was hoping I could get some info from you all. My husband and I are discussing the possibility of moving to Las Vegas for my job. I've been searching reality/rental website and wow is there a lot of stuff out there, and for great prices as well, but it's so much I don't know where to start. If anyone has any advice on what areas are good, what ones to avoid it would be most helpful.
Also how is the job market out there. I'd be moving with a job but H would need to find one. If you'd prefer to PM just let me know you sent it cause I never go in there!
TIA!!
Re: XP from TK - Relocation Info
I recommend calling a Realtor, they can help you with rentals and it will not cost you anything. I work for a real estate company, so if you want to go that route let me know and can refer someone. As for areas, where is your office? Green Valley (Henderson) and Summerlin are my favorite areas. Silverado Ranch is a good area with good prices. I personally would avoid many parts of the east side and north side of town (with the exception of Alliante, that area is very nice). That is JMO though.
What does your H do? The job market here is very weak, but some industries are still hiring.
I email a realtor last night, but haven't heard anything back yet. We are actually thinking of buying instead of renting because things are so affordable out there we could get ownership on something for the same amount as rent. It's scary to think of going somewhere new and buying right away but we feel like it's the right thing for us to do. Do yu have any advice on finding a realtor that's willing to work long distance?
I work for an airline so being near McCarran would be a plus, but I won't be driving to work everyday so it isn't a big deal if my drive is 30+ minutes. H works with computers, and would like to continue to do so, but he knows that he'll have to take what he can get. Do you know what industries/companies are hiring right now? I'd love for him to contact some people and maybe set up some interviews for when we'll be out there looking at places.
Thanks for the info!
Hi ladies!
Hope to have you both in Vegas soon!
Green Valley/Henderson is closest to the airport. I'm not a big fan of the SW part of town, but that's just a personal preference based on scenery/temperature and not related to safety.
I live NW, very close to Centennial Hills (we actually live in the Providence master plan, a bit north of Centennial)--love the area. It's about 25 minutes from the Strip/airport area, but our neighborhood is about 10 degrees cooler in the summer than everywhere else in town. Yay!
You can definitely buy for as much or cheaper than it is to rent--in fact, one of my coworkers is looking to building in our neighborhood, because building new is going to save her several hundred dollars per month over her rent. (If either of you want the name of our builder, let me know!)
I've found it's REALLY difficult to get hired by the hospitality companies here. Obviously it happens because thousands work for them, but the hiring process is very convoluted--you can only apply for one position at a time, they don't keep you updated on the status of your application, etc. The market here is very, very depressed, though it's showing some weak signs of life. There are a lot of businesses here, albeit mostly small ones, so once the economy is on a more steady rise, I think the opportunities will break open again.
Feel free to PM me with any other specific questions!
Hello! H and I moved to Vegas about a year ago and bought right away. We made two trips out here to house hunt before the move. We ended up buying in Summerlin and absolutely love it! Our realtor was great. If you'd like her info let me know!
Good luck!
Aggie you've got PM
MrsJ - do you know how much (ball park) the new construction is? Our budget is pretty small, I wouldn't want to waste a builders time if it was above our budget.
New construction is about the same price as regular homes right now. They can not charge more than what the house would appraise for, and they appraise based on comps for the area, so if there are a lot of foreclosures in the area then the new build price must come down. Like I said before, I work in Real Estate so I can give you some good advice, but I am not an agent so I would not be trying to blow smoke up your behind :-) If you are comfortable PMing me and giving me a range that you are looking in, I can tell you which, if any, new builds would be in your price range.
Like PP said, the Henderson/Green Valley area would be very close to the airport. I live in Silverado Ranch, which is in Vegas, but right next to Green Valley. We just bought a foreclosure in the area, and it was a lot cheaper than the same thing in Green Valley because it is not Green Valley. We are less than a mile from there though. I am biased since I live there, but I highly recommend the area. I am about 10 minutes, if that, from the airport and the strip.

I am SO happy to find this post! My husband works for Fedex and there is a job opening here and it would be a big promotion for him, I read on another site, how dangerous LV is, and basically the locals are saying "DON'T MOVE HERE!", it would just be a "pit stop" for us, but it sounds like you ladies like living here. Good to know!
We currently live in Tampa FL - so used to the heat, and I hope that my job is going to allow me to work remotely so the job market isn't an issue. Anything else we should look out for? What is your favorite thing about living in LV?
Any info helps! Thanks! Holly
My take on that is that anyone who finds LV dangerous must be from a much smaller town or city. I'm from Chicago and there are actually neighborhoods there that I just don't go near period, whereas there is no where in Las Vegas I actually avoid. It certainly has crime like any other city, but far less than I'm used to.
Favorite things about LV: it's foodie heaven, no snow to shovel and no humidity to frizz my hair, lots of great places within driving distance for a weekend escape. Least favorite: having to own a car--been here almost five years and am STILL really bitter about that.
