Weeds . . .

Hello all!

I hope you're all having a great day!

My DH and I bought a home last summer and our back yard looked great! It was a blank slate which is what I wanted, but we didn't want to do any major gardening until recently.

Anyways. . we have bermuda grass and at first, it started to green nicely since it's dormit in the winter, but then weeds popped up EVERYWHERE!

They're the kind that look like dead lettuce on your ground and they get rather large.

Whats the best way of getting rid of these things? DH bought 'weed and feed' but that didn't seem to work at all, so now he's outside attempting to dig them up in 90 degree weather.

 Suggestions??

 TIA!

Re: Weeds . . .

  • We spray with Weed-B-Gone or a weed & crabgrass killer combo.  Give it a couple days and then go over the remaining weeds with a garden weasel ( so much easier to pull up) and then yank them out.  Good luck!
  • Does it look like this?

    If so, that's a plantain.

As for how to get rid of it, plantains love heavy, compacted, acidic soil.  The long-term solution would be to core aerate and amend.  Have your soil tested to determine pH and apply either lime (if the pH is 6.1 or lower) or sulfur (if the pH is 7.0 or higher).  There's plenty of information on the internet for determining how much you'd need based on the pH of your soil.

What she said. A note about weed and feed: it's not that useful because you can't control the amount of fertilize for what you need without putting on a higher or lower amount of herbicide. I'd go with separate fertilizer and herbicide. Using a weed & feed may seem like it saves you money but in the long run it doesn't.
