Kindle vs. Nook

Hey ladies - my sisters and I are thinking about getting our dad a Kindle for his birthday in June. I saw the Nook at B&N and wanted to know if any of you had either. Likes? Dislikes? Thanks!

Re: Kindle vs. Nook

  • I have the nook from B&N and LOVE it.  I recommend it highly.  I have never seen a Kindle, but I can't imagine I would like it more than my nook.

  • Love my Nook, my DH gave it to me for my birthday. I like that it is touchscreen rather than the keypad on the kindle. Plus, I like that I could go to a B&M store and actually look at it before I got it. Both Barnes & Noble and Best Buy sell them.

I've got a Kindle, but that's because it was the only one that offered the wireless service for books here in Canada.  The Nook just wasn't an option for me.

That being said, I love my Kindle.  I can see how a touch screen would be a nice feature, but I don't notice not having it (if that makes sense).

  • I love my Kindle so much. Its store is easy to use, and you can buy books on the web and send it to the Kindle wirelessly. I love the simplicity of the device and it is so easy to read on.
  • I love the Nook. I was deciding between a Kindle and a Nook and since I get ebooks for free from my library, I went with Nook since Kindle soesn't support it.
  • I have a first gen Kindle and love it.  I'm sure the Nook is fine, but I love my Kindle.  Each battery charge lasts insanely long (weeks!), this is partly a result of it not having a touch screen or color display. It's easy to use even if you're low-tech, there are actually a good number of free books available too.
  • I love my nook!  I was deciding between the kindle and the nook but went with the nook because I was able to actually hold it and play with it before buying.  That being said I was in Target the other week and they are now selling the Kindle I did not like the feel of it vs my nook but that is just a personal thing.  Another reason I like the nook is that they are able to update it instead of just coming out with another version.  I also love all the free books and the fact that I can borrow e-books from my local library.

Kindles can update software wireless too (see link here).  You don't have to buy a new version.

  • My nook gave me a free cookie when I went into a B&N store once.  Just saying...

Honestly, I'm sure both are fine.  I happen to have a nook, and I think it's amazing.  Books can be downloaded or sideloaded from my computer, books can be in epub, pdf, or B&N format, I can play music, I can see the covers of books on my touchscreen before I buy them, there is now an internet browser and games, I can lend some books to people, I can upload my photos to use as a screensaver or background, I can turn the page with my finger on the touchscreen, I can read one-handed, I can carry a bazillion books in one thin device, I can read my purchased books online too, I can get tons of free books, the nook is on the awesome Android platform, and it feels so nice in my hand.

  • I have a Nook and my DH has a Kindle DX. Honestly, both are great. If one offers something you want that the other doesn't support, go with that one; otherwise, you can't go wrong with either one. They really are pretty much the same. I think B&N offers some perks (free book every Friday, book lending for some books, ability to check out ebooks from library and read them on the device) but it wouldn't necessarily sway me one way or the other. I just had some gift cards for the Nook. DH wanted the giant screen, so he has the Kindle DX. I do think the Nook is more stream-lined than the Kindle.
