What an amazingly exciting, stressful, challenging and overall emotional 36 hours. Here's my somewhat long birth story.
I
was admitted around 9 p.m. on Friday and they started me on drugs to
help get my cervix moving around 11 pm. I did not sleep at all Friday
night because I just couldn't get comfortable in the bed and my DH was
snoring like crazy. My OB came in at 8 a.m. and they decided that since
I'd dilated to 3 cm they wouldn't administer another dose of that drug
and instead would move along to the pitocin.
Between 8 and
about 2, I was contracting pretty regularly. However, as they upped my
dosage in the afternoon the contractions got very painful and were
right on top of each other. When I finally got to 4 cm I was able to
get my epidural. After that, I was actually able to sleep for about
three hours but I woke up around 8 when I realized I was starting to
feel the contractions. Within about 10 minutes, they were beyond
bearable but the anesthesia man was in with another patient. It took him
about 45 minutes to be able to come back and re-do the epi. After that,
I was in heaven and slept for about three hours.
When I woke at
11, I felt wrong. I was shaking so hard my teeth were chattering, and I
was having awful pains in my back and legs. The nurse came in, did an
internal and said I'd gone from 4 to 9.5 cm in that three hours and she
had dropped significantly. My DH got up and went to the restroom to
change from his pajamas into his clothes because the nurse said we
should call our family back and that we were about 1-2 hours out.
The
reason I share the detail about him changing clothes is because in the
amount of time it took him to go in and come back out, things became
dire. Her heartrate, which was typically around 130 - 150, was 25.
Within 60 seconds there were about six nurses plus my ob in there
unplugging everything and getting my bed down the hall for an emergency
c-section. It took about 10 minutes from the time things went south to
the time we heard her cry and our lives changed forever. I am actually
really glad that I already had an epi in place because otherwise I
would not have been awake thru the process and instead would have been
knocked out entirely.
I have never been so scared in my life
but the team at the hospital was truly amazing. She is the most
beautiful thing I have ever seen and I have found myself in awe of her
almost all day long. I keep staring at her thinking "how did I create
something so beautiful" as well as "holy crap we have a whole person
depending on us now."
So while the delivery process wasn't
quite what we expected or thought it would be, the result is perfect -
a 6.1 lb, 18 3/4-inch beautiful little girl.
Here's the "before" shot - a belly pic taken before we left the house.
And here's the "after" - my daughter.

My blog
WOW! It must have been so scary! I am so glad that everything went well in the end. She is beautiful. Congrats!
He's my fairytale, a dream when I'm not sleeping.
<a href="http://s279.photobucket.com/albums/kk121/behapybride/?action=viewCongrats on your beautiful bundle of joy! Sorry to hear about the stressful situation and emergecy c-section. I'm not a fan of epidurals for that reason, but you and your DH must feel so blessed to have your little Madeline at home in your arms.
Take things easy....really take time to recover and rest. You need someone to pamper and mother you for a few weeks so that you can just focus on your little girl. Let us know if you need anything!
