Critique Needed: Carnival Bday Party Menu

I'm WAY ahead in the planning game, but I like to be prepared and to plan :)

Party is in early August, for about 40-50 people (a dozen or so kids)...It's for my son's 1st birthday. We are having it in the backyard, renting a tent and having carnival games, dunk tank, face painting, etc.

Apps: Chips, Pretzels, Popcorn ( i need more ideas here )

Main: Burgers, Hot Dogs (in a steamer! hehe), Sausage & Peppers, Wings

Sides: 2 types of salad

Dessert: Cake, Ice Cream Sundae bar with 3 flavors

I feel like this isn't enough at all for this many people. Any ideas?

Re: Critique Needed: Carnival Bday Party Menu

  • Candy apples, churros, corn dogs, funnel cakes (market days makes awesome funnel cakes!), cotton candy, nachos, roasted peanuts?
  • Here are some more carnival inspired food ideas:

    corndogs
    churros
    frozen bananas on a stick
    funnel cakes
    elephant ears
    nachos
    soft pretzels
    peanuts
    caramel apples
    cotton candy

  • oh nachos are good! we were thinking of funnel cakes/zeppoles...but it may be tough to make it for 50ish people!

no nuts...got a few peanut allergies attending.

  • I'd also throw in something fresh for the appetizers - tomato & mozzarella skewers, fruit... etc. Not really carnival-y but nice to have a healthier, lighter option.
  • We have a place here that will rent carnival type food machines (hot dog cart, pop corn, sno cone or cotton candy machines, nacho pump, etc.).  I'm sure you could find something similar in your area.

Might be a fun way to showcase some of the more carnival type food options!

If you're looking for additional options, doing more than two salads would be good.  You could do potato salad, pasta salad, fruit salad, green lettuce salads, cous cous salad... there are a ton of options there and that might be a way to up the healthy factor and also provide options for any vegetarians.  A lot of those could be made ahead of time or you could even look into pre-made ones from the grocery store.

  • Grilled corn on the cob would be fun!

I'd also throw in a veggie tray and fruit tray - even though they're not "carnival" they're easy and everybody liked them.

    HTH!

  • I love the Carnival themed birthday party!  I remember having one when I was little.  Anyway, Cotton candy and caramel apples are always fun.  They sell indivudally wrapped cotton candy and caramel apples at Smart n Final.  You could also make fruit-ke-bobs.  Cut up fruit and string it on a bamboo stick.

Also, I know you didn't ask for this kind of advice, but you can buy a big roll of tickets at any party store or smart n final, and hand them out to all the guests, and make them "buy" their food with the tickets.  This is fun for the kids at least! :-)
