My parent's 50th anniversary is next year and my parents have been talking about wanting to do a vacation with the whole family. There would be 11 of us total - 7 adults, 4 kids ranging from 3-13.
The first idea is Disney, which would be a lot of money, and DH is wary because my family can be....trying sometimes and he doesn't want to spend a crapload of $$ and be miserable by day 2. So Disney is not off the table, but I'd like to explore other possibilities. Can anyone suggest some different places for us to look into?
-Probably 4-5 days
-Limited by school vacations, so the last week of March, or summer. We have ruled out FL in the summer, due to heat.
-Sis #1 lives in MI and they'll have to drive as it's really expensive to fly with 5 people. They were willing to drive to FL, so it can be decently far away, but....
-I'd prefer to keep costs down, so nothing extravagant as most of us have some upcoming large expenses to pay or are on limited budgets.
I'm open to pretty much anywhere, but there has to be enough varied activities to do for the whole family, as well as having a comfortable home base to hang out. The kids are all active, but my older parents are not. They're the type of people that will go to the beach, get a ocean view room and then spend most of the day inside watching the weather channel. Neither of them swim. I know, this will be challenging to plan.
Thanks for any suggestions, ladies!!
Re: Family vacations ideas
I know I'm probably bias, but I LOVE DC. We did a large family vacation here (my family, my cousins and aunt and uncle and my grandparents) and it was great. There is something for everyone, things are relatively inexpensive (museums are free, tons of free sites and interesting events), metro is clean and easy to use, and the history is just awesome.
If you do the end of March, it is cherry blossom season which is busy but gorgeous. I love that time of year here!
I don't even live there, and I love love love DC as well. But I also lived in MD for a few years, so we went often.
How about a lake house rental? My family is all over as well, and 2 years ago we rented a house on Lake Michigan and next summer we're doing one in the 1000 Islands. If you wanted to do a theme park, I came across some rentals in the great lakes near Kings Island Ohio, or how about Hershey Park in PA? Not as spectacular as Disney, but much less $$.
In the Adirondacks, Old Forge or Lake Placid area would be fun. Check out www.vrbo.com and craigslist for rentals.
rent a house on the coast of maine or somewhere like that.
house rental may seem expensive but divide that up between the people/families and factor in that you can cook your own meals (eliminiating some dining out) and it'll be cheaper then a hotel.
we used http://www.homeaway.com/ to find our vacation house for this summer
