New Home Tips

We just bought our first home (built in 1975). Besides buying energy star applicances, what else can we do or not do to be more eco-friendly as well as budget friendly?

Re: New Home Tips

  • How's your insulation?  Do you have ceiling fans?
    Twin boys due 7/25/12
  • Install low flow shower heads and a low flow head for your kitchen and bathroom sinks.

    Insulation.

Check the temperature on your fridge, freezer and water heater.

    CFL or LED light bulbs.

VOC free paints if you need to paint any rooms.

    Start a compost.

Plant some fruit trees or berry bushes of rhubarb. (Doesn't save energy, but tastes nice!)

  • So far we have done the energy star on the new appliances we needed to buy and use no VOC paint. We also tried not to bring any toxic or harsh cleaners into the house and changed the preset yard watering timer. Next on my list is to try my green thumb and plant a few plants in the house for air quality.
