What size is your "outside" trash can?

I know, what a freaking odd question, but I just hired a garbage man (it's privatized in my area for those who are not used to that), and he said we could get away with a 32 gallon. Sadly I can't find any of this size with wheels to buy locally. Guess I'll be dragging the stupid thing instead of rolling it. Or make DH do it.

Anyway.... thanks for any answers you can give.

Re: What size is your "outside" trash can?

  • Ours is massive and provided by the city (but luckily it has two wheels on the back), so no help on where you can buy one.

Have you looked at Lowe's/Home Depot?  I think you'll have way better luck at one of those places than Target or WalMart since they are more specialized in home stuff.

  • I just hired a garbage guy within the past hour, and he said we should be okay with a 32" gallon. But I can't find one locally that's wheeled (at least from the website stock descriptions.) We're going to Lowes tonight to buy a caulking gun, so I'm definitely going to browse everything over.

  • How many times per week is your trash pick up?

Ours is once a week, so we definitely need the gigantic one that they provide to us.  We can actually pay an extra monthly fee to have a second one brought to us, but we don't need it.  I'm googling now to see if I can figure out how big our city trash cans are.

I'm guessing ours may be even larger than 32 gal.  Here is a photo of one that is similar to ours: http://www.myballard.com/images/garbage_night.jpg

  • Weekly. Garbage guy said it would fit 3 tall kitchen bags, which is about the amount of trash we can weekly. In fact, the past two weeks we've only had about 2 kitchen bags of trash. But now I'm wondering if we should go bigger. But when you go bigger, the price of the garbage guy goes up too, and I only know the price for the 32 gallon disposal. Ha.  I'm overthinking this. I bet if I see them in person I'll be able to judge better.

  • We have a 60 gallon trash can, plus recycling bins. Ours gets collected once a week. Sometimes it's full; sometimes it takes a couple weeks to fill it. But we also have the luxury of putting up to 5 additional "bundles" out each week.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • Actually I just found this: http://www.naperville.il.us/garbagecarts.aspx

Based on that info...I think our city trash can must be the 95 gallon, because I cleaned the house this weekend and fit at least 4 kitchen size trash bags full plus a big box in there, in addition to some other random trash.

If you are only going to get pick up once a week, I would think you would definitely need something larger than 32 gal!  However, if you get trash pick up twice a week, you may be ok.

We recycle, too, and still there are often times when our massive trash can is filled to the brim (depending on the week)!

ETA:  I FINALLY found the Huntsville info on trash...ours is def 90 gal.

  • Mine looks like the one in hopscotch's pic. It was provided by our garbage service....

I would probably do a 64 gal at minimum for once/week pick up.  Then again, you guys may not produce the trash we do!  Haha!  I just get annoyed when I have to wait until the big outdoor can is emptied before I can get rid of trash in my house.  Right now, for example...after spending all weekend cleaning the house top to bottom...nothing else will really fit until trash picks up tomorrow.

Ryan's cousin that has twin boys and lives a few doors down actually pays an extra fee to have 2 of those massive 90 gal trash cans!

  • imagemamie329:

That may be perfect!  I think I'd definitely opt bigger than going only 32 gal, so the 50 may be worth giving a shot.  The wheels make it a LOT easier too!

  • Okay, I think we'll give this one a whirl. It has wheels and is in my favorite neutral. I just don't know how much garbage man will charge for this size, but I think we'll need more than 32 for my peace of mind. One pizza box could fill half a 32!  Thanks for the help!

I'm not going to lie...I *may* have 4 pizza boxes in the trash can outside right now.  And, no...we haven't had a pizza party recently.

  • I have 2 90 gallon giant ones from our trash company... they didnt charge us anymore just asked what size we wanted and how many.  We opted for the big one.  We got the 2nd one when we were doing some remodeling a couple of years ago.  Most weeks we only use one but sometimes in the summer, DH uses one for lawn clippings and one for trash (although I hate when he does this because it basically composts in the can and makes the whole garage smell because its so hot) other than that, we really only use the second one if we have a party or did a lot of heavy cleaning or remodeling that week.

LOL!  I actually haven't had pizza since he was gone, but during my surgery recovery period we had it twice (and we get two pizzas each time because he likes different stuff), so they were leftover boxes that had been sitting in the fridge.  I'm horrible about cleaning it out!

  • I asked my dad about it (he's the one who rec'd this garbage guy), and he said 32 should be fine for me and DH. :-/  And you guys are telling me 64-90!  Maybe my dad underestimates how much pre-packaged food we use in a week.

  • Not to be judgy but this post is making me sad.  Recycle, ladies!  So many more things are recyclable than you think.  Like plastic wrap!  We probably have enough trash to make dragging the bin worthwhile every other week.  And even then it's not usually totally full.

  • Who said they don't recycle? Or are you just in shock that some ladies are filling up 90 gallon cans weekly?

On another note, I'm kind of floored a post about trash cans got the most posts of like... the week.

Probably a true statement... we dont recycle at home.  I do feel guilty about it but we would have to pay an additional $35 a month (trash is $15 a month) to have recycling picked up.  I think its completely idiotic that I should have to pay someone to recycle.  So basically I refuse to do it until its included.  That said, we do recycle aluminum cans as scrap metal and I take magazines and newspapers into work with me to recycle.  But I know there are a ton of other things that should be recycled so I'm not trying to make excuses.

  • Gotta agree with Lark on this one. I'm pretty passionate about recycling. DH and I sometimes don't even fill our 32-gallon trash can in a week. Recycling gets filled pretty quickly though. And hawki, if you're paying the city for trash pickup, why not pay for recycling too?  I don't understand why you'd think it's idiotic to have to pay someone to recycle but not to pay someone to pick up your trash. You'd be helping everyone by reducing the massive amounts of trash that get dumped in landfills. **jumping off soapbox**

We DO recycle everything that we are able to.  Unfortunately we are not allowed to recycle any glass...clear or dark...and we have other limitations too.  Everything we can recycle, though, we definitely do.  Along with the full trash can that I just pulled to the road, is a blue bin sitting completely full of recyclables waiting to be picked up on Thursday!

  • I'm glad to hear you all are recycling what you can, but even sadder to hear the stories of why you're not.  Not that it's your fault, hawki, but why in the world would it be more expensive to have your recycling picked up than the trash?  In California, where you get money back for recycling, the city does it for free because it more than pays for itself.  And Hopscotch, why do they not take glass (rhetorical question)?  That makes no sense!  Glass is so easily meltable into other useful things!

No idea!  I wish they did since my H runs through a couple of pickle jars a week!  They used to accept clear glass only...then they changed it to no glass at all...kind of annoying.

  • If you'll notice in my first post, I mention my recycle bins.  But hey, some people like being judgmental instead of reading. So whatevs.

  • We don't make a lot of trash as we recycle a lot and compost our butts off. I put out one trash bag every two weeks. We have to put it in a blue bag and just use the kitchen can until it's full and then drag it into the garage. So I don't think I'm the best measure!
