white vinegar as fabric softener

I think I have seen a couple of you post that you do this. How much vinegar do you use? And is it possible to add anything to it to make a nice scent linger afterward?

I fill the fabric softner thing on the washer.  its probably about 1/4 cup.
    nothing
  • If you want a nice smell, you can put a couple drops of essential oil on a cloth in the dryer (if you use the dryer).

I don't use anything for fabric softener - it's fine if I don't over dry.

  • I never had any luck using vinegar.  Maybe because my water is hard, I'm not sure, but based on the crunchiness of my laundry, I might as well have used nothing.
  • I put it in one of those Downy balls and fill it to the same line as the fabric softener should go to.  I haven't noticed a strong lingering vinegar smell.
  • I use a cap from an old fabric softener bottle.  For a big load I'll use a whole cap, for a normal load I'll use half.  It smells vinegar-y when it's wet, but it doesn't smell when it's dry.  So, I don't bother using any oils or anything to help with the smell.
  • I know the vinegar smell will go away.. I was just hoping to leave the clothes smelling nice after. Maybe I will try an eo.

    Me too.

I put lavender EO in the vinegar jug, and it smells good when I pour it out but I can't smell it on the clothes at all after they are washed and dried.

  • for the vinegar i fill the fabric softener compartment so about 1/4 cup. for scent, i use scented soap in my laundry mix and i can still smell that scent after the dryer. if you want something more i would do the cloth with EO in the dryer.

  • I just fill it to the fill line on my washer which I would would guess is no more than 1/3 of a cup.  It won't smell like vinegar, trust me!  My laundry always ends up w/ a nice fresh smell!

Ah, I know what you mean.  Jeff had me use unscented Dr. B's when we made our homemade detergent, so I don't get any yummy clean clothes scent.  I wish the clean clothes scent came in an eco-friendly oil.  : )

  • I use chamomile essential oil in my vinegar and water fabric softener. I use a capful.
