at home daycare

I am considering being a SAHM when my baby is born.  We will need some type of income so I would like to have a home daycare.  I live in Chesapeake, VA.  I was wondering how much you pay your at-home daycare person?  Or how much you charge if you have one in the Hampton Roads area.

Re: at home daycare

  • 6 years ago when my DD was a baby, I think the average rate for infant care up to about age 2 was $150/wk.  There are some in-home daycare providers that charged significantly less but my (short) experience with them was less than stellar and kind of scary. It was 2 women with at LEAST 15 kids - 1 day DD was picked up at the same time 1 of the women was leaving for her 2nd job and the 2nd lady was laying on the couch unable to get up because her back hurt. Really??? I didn't like that scenario one bit and changed care providers as quickly as I was able and was glad to pay more for someone who took in less kids and was able to give my infant DD the attention she deserved.

  • The going rate for Richmond is $150-$200 per week (which includes diapers, wipes and food).  I live in the Far West End of Richmond if that helps... the traditional daycares around here charge about $300/week as a comparison.

Not sure how these prices would translate into the Chesapeake area though.
