Ideas for growing my own vegetable to make my own baby food

Ok, so DH and I are going to start a little garden once he quits his job to take care of DD (in only 2 weeks!! - yay no more of my having to drive to daycare!).  I'm thinking squash, green beans, green peas. (what else?)  AND I would really like to do it as organically and healthfully as possible for my baby girl.  What is the name of the plant that I can plant to help keep bugs away?  Any more ideas?

Re: Ideas for growing my own vegetable to make my own baby food

  • well, different plants deter or attract (like trap crops) different pests.  Marigolds are said to be good for nematodes, nasturtiums are trap crops for black aphids, onions/garlic repel other bugs...Over all, I find daily monitoring of the plants, hand removal, and, when damage becomes an issue for the plant (i.e., not at the first sign of a minor damage), insecticidal soap or other organic insecticide.

A lot of ppl on here use the Square Foot Gardening method (read the book).

I would also say that gardening isn't necessarily going to save you boat loads of cash.  this year in my blog (link in sig), I'm keeping track of my harvests & how much I've spent on my garden *just this year.*  So far, I've spent $100+ on seeds, a few herb plants, potting soil to start seeds, kelp/fish emulsion, compost, etc.  And I've just had 1 harvest of arugula and some herbs so far!

So, def. do it if you're looking for something fun to do but I would caution if the motivation is to save money.

Ditto. Also, it takes a while for the crops to produce, so you are still going to have to supplement fruits and veggies from the produce market. My advice would be to spend $10 -15 at a local produce or farmers market to buy veggies to make baby food.

I'm not trying to discourage you from starting your own garden, but gardening is a trial and error hobby/adventure. I wouldn't try to make baby food with my first gardening attempt.

ETA: I made my DD's baby food as well. I just went to the produce market and bought veggies and did the ice cube tray method for storing food. I recommend picking up a copy of Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron.
