Philly fan gets tasered for running on the field
Re: Philly fan gets tasered for running on the field
On one hand, the kid wouldn't stop. They had to do something.
But on the other end, I haven't heard of other guys being tasered who run around at other sporting events. They usually just get cornered eventually - it's not like he was waving a gun around and threatening to shoot someone.
I think it was a bit much. They should've just cornered him and arrested him - he had enough people going after him anyway. It just makes it seem like the police got tired of chasing him and used the last weapon besides a gun. They would've been better off throwing a shoe at him or something. The kid's an idiot, but he didn't deserve that.
Call me insensitive, but if you're stupid enough to expect to run out on the field during a professional sporting event where it is clearly STRICTLY prohibited, then you deserve to get tasered.
Was it a bit harsh? Yep. Will the next person think twice about whether or not they wanna be tasered for being ajackass? Yep.
Yeah, the action was harmless AT FIRST. Who was to say that it wasn't going to get out of hand and then the kid was going to be too far away to be tasered?

Yes he was a fan at the game. It clearly states on the ticket and DURING the game that NO ONE is permitted on the field. He made the choice to jump onto the field and run around like an idiot. How was the security/cops to know he was a harmless 17 yo kid? They did not. After the third attempt he was hit. The kid should have surrendered by then. I think they do need to air on the side of caution (does anyone remember Monica Selas?).
BTW the kid called his father to ask if he should do it. Um, if you have to ask the answer is no.
I don't think it was unneccesary. Sure, we know now he was a harmless kid, but if they hadn't released his age, would anyone know he was a minor? Additionally, if he had been hiding a weapon, and attacked someone, people would be wondering why the cops hadn't taken him down faster.
Heat of the moment, someone is evading arrest... tasering is a lot better than drawing a gun.
Apparently, someone didn't learn his lesson because another fan ran out on the field - and he wasn't Tasered. Clearly, it didn't send a message.
I still think it was a bit much - especially if they're using it against one guy but not another.
Did the second guy immediately surrender? I didn't hear about the 2nd guy, so I don't know.
It's hard to measure how effective the deterrent is, since you don't know how many drunk idiots are in the stands saying, "I wanna run on the field!!!" while his buddies are saying, "No, duuuude, they will TAZE you!!!".
I think it was harsh, but appropriate. I hate these idiot, drunk fans that ruin the experience for everyone else. And, as others mentioned, we have to remember Monica Seles and the League (sp?) father/son - you never know when the rabid fan will hurt someone.
