life updates

So the time has come, and I think I have to go back to school. Ugh. I was stupid & just f*cked around a lot in college when I was 18,19,20, and never did much of anything substantial and therefore also never finished & got a degree. Believe me - I cringe just thinking about it. It really wouldn't be much of an issue if we planned on living here for the rest of our lives, but we don't plan on doing that.

We talked about our different options, and I'm pretty sure I have to go back to school and get a degree, or I need to go to some sort of vocational school or something. This economy and the huge amounts of people being unemployed has just made me realize how lucky I am to have a stable job, and how important it is for me to have a degree for when I am looking for a job in the future.

I suppose I should also add that we have a pretty set plan to move in 3-4 years. So I have time to get my school sh!t in order. I just remember how much I hated school & it makes me want to cry. Plus the thought of being 27 and sitting in classrooms with 20 year olds? Ay caramba.

On the other hand, since I don't want to teach, practice law, be a doctor, design, etc... my options are pretty open. I really just need a degree... in almost anything, which makes me slightly excited that my options are so open. Maybe I'll go ahead and get that degree in History that I've always wanted but always been told "What are you going to do with that?!"

I don't know what the point of this was, I just wanted to share since this information has only been shared between Ted & I. We like to keep our impending plans secret. LOL. It's to avoid unwanted criticism.

Re: life updates

  • Have you given any thought to doing school online?  I went back and got my bachelors this way and absolutely LOVED it!  It also allowed me to both work and go to school full time.  I went to DeVry and they have a ton of options as far as majors go.  It really doesn't matter what major you go with unless you really intend to go into that field or doing something really specific.  Employees mainly just see that you have a degree...and that's it.  That was the advice I got from my enrollment adviser anyway.

I think going back to school is great and I encourage anyone to do it.  I had an 85 year old lady in one of my classes and I thought that was the best thing ever!

     Good luck!

Ted's grandma got her Master's from Pepperdine when she was in her 70s. I don't remember what it was in, but that's not the point. I guess you really can go back to school at any age.

I'll look into DeVry! Thanks for the tip.

  • What is your job now and do you like it enough to get your degree in that field?  I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit, I think you'll be fine going back to school now.  You are much wiser than you were at 18 - 20 so you'll probably enjoy classes more :)  Good luck!

Right now I do payroll, account receivable & payable for a construction company. I can't say I love what I do, but I am one of those people who does like working in an office. Getting a degree somewhat related to what I do now would be a good idea because then I would have tons of work experience, plus a degree in it.

My aunt went back to school later in life for accounting. She likes it and has a good job.

  • I went back after getting my bachelors in Sociology and realizing it wasn't good for much.  So I went and got an associates in Paralegal studies... best thing i ever did.  I got a great internship, great job...experience then landed the job i'm currently in and i make really good money and i've only been in the field 7 years... and (cross fingers) i will be able to land a great new job soon.

If you have accounting/billable experience I would stick to that.  Take some accounting courses and go that route.  Mixing your experience and education you can never go wrong.

  • good luck love!  DH got his masters online.

  • I know what you mean Sarah.  It's hard going back to school after you fooled around so much at the beginning.

I have been 1 credit away from graduating with just an associates for 2 years now.  And since I f*cked up so much in school I don't think it's going to be possible.  It's kind of humiliating to think that my BIL will get his bachelors degree before I ever do.  But then I have to remind myself that I only need to do this for me and Eric, nobody else.

GL and more power to you for doing it.  I really hope you find out what you want to do and are able to enjoy the process.

  • Good luck! You'd be surprised how many 30, 40, 50+ college students I have. Unless you are at a "party school" you won't be alone with a bunch of 18-20 year olds.

  • I went back to school when I was older.  I don't think I was ready for college when I was 18 and I messed around the entire time.  I had lots of friends my age and older who were in my classes.  A lot of people are going back to school right now and so the schools are full of older students.  If you do decide to do the online route make sure that you can learn that way.  I took some classes online and hated it.  I need to go to class everyday to learn and to keep on top of everything.  Good luck!

  • DH is in school now and he's 28 :)  I think if you don't know specifically what you want to do, you'd probably be best getting it in something like business that will open your options more.  Sometimes your degree matters and sometimes it doesnt.  Im thinking about getting my masters online too!
  • DH is going through the same thing right now, and he's trying to figure out what he wants to do as well.  When I was in college there were plenty of people in their 30s and 40s, as well as some people who had served in the military and then went to school.  So, you won't be alone = )

Good luck in whatever you choose, and make sure that what you do pick is what will make you happy.

  • Thank you so much for all of the support ladies! It means so much to me. I have several different options I need to explore and decide which one I think would be the best for me & us.
