The great thing about cabbage, carrots and all the other fall crops, is all
you need to store them for months is a cold, well-ventilated space. A
spare refrigerator works pretty well, but even better and more spacious
is a real root cellar. Storing root crops in a passively cooled cellar is one of the most efficient ways to preserve food. Here's instructions to build a root cellar in a corner of your basement. All I need now is a basement!

ditto! you suck :P
Depends if you can insulate it enough it will not freeze.
The key to a root cellar or cold room is keeping it from freezing in winter.
Double ditto! We don't have a basement, garage, shed, or a linen closet. There is stuff all.over.my.house.
There are advantages to buying an older house. Mine was built in 1961 - back when gardening was still in style.
My parents have a root cellar... that is just dirt. Scary, but effective.
