expanded veggie garden... what to grow?
Hello!
I have a 3x4 garden I typically will grow cukes, green peppers, zucchini and I also have a whiskey barrel I use for tomatoes...
This year, we created a 2x12 area and I didn't know if you can put both herbs and veggies in the same area-like oregano and peppers-or if that will mess up the flavor of the peppers? Same with fruits-like strawberries or melons.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I already have some peppers and tomatoes going right now...
Re: expanded veggie garden... what to grow?
Strawberries will spread like wildfire, so I wouldn't put them anyplace that you won't want them to take over.
As far as veggies and herbs, you can mix and match. I follow the square foot gardening (SFG) method, and place a different type of plants in each square foot.
Melons are on vines, so they spread out. I train my vine plants to grow up a trellis so that I can mix bush plants with vine plants.
You can put veg & herbs together. However, for perennial herbs (my oregano/parsley/rosemary/chives come back every year. basil, is annual) I would put them some place else where you won't constantly be planting & unplanting around them. So, personally, I would probably turn the whiskey barrel into your "herb garden" and plant the veg in the ground.
I ditto pp comments too.
