Anybody been through a hurricane?

Stupid Gustav!!!  I am supposed to leave tomorrow morning for a girl's trip to Gulf Shores.  I'm so frustrated because I put a lot of time and energy into planning this trip and now we've spent all week trying to decide if we should stay or go?

(humming "Shoud I Stay or Should I Go Now?" in my head)

Anyone been through a hurricane?  Or been on a beach not in the direct path, but felt the after-effects of a hurricane?

Re: Anybody been through a hurricane?

  • How close is the hurricane predicted to come to that area? If it is fairly close, you might get evacuated. Can you reschedule the trip? It might be safer for your family.
  • Rescheduling isn't really an option because most people cannot go a different week due to work obligations.  We can get a total refund of our money, however.  Right now the vote is 2 go, 1 don't go and 2 on the fence, but leaning toward don't go.

I think the problem is that we all REALLY want to go because this is the only week of vacation most of us are taking all year.  So we're really disappointed.

Plus, I hate making decisions!!  :)

  • i realize this response is late, but what did you decide to do?  my sister and i knew Hurricane Isidore was going to come close to Cancun a couple yrs ago, but we decided to go anyway.  big mistake.  i mean, it wasn't HORRIBLE, but we shopped for 3 days straight.  no beach time.  it sucked!
  • We were renting a condo directly from the owner and she gave us a full refund, so we decided not to go.  The owner said we probably made a good decision, because we wouldn't have enjoyed the trip because of the stress.  Gulf Shores was under a mandatory evacuation from Sunday morning to Tuesday afternoon.

Everyone was really bummed, but we all still wanted to do something.  So, we rented a cabin at Dale Hollow Lake in TN.  Still got to go to the beach, although on a lake instead of the ocean.
