XP Ground bees

Does anyone have any experience with these?  Last night we caught one of the insects swarming in our front yard and spent an hour or so looking online trying to identify it and we now believe they are miner bees.  If we are right, they don't sting, which is good because last night I counted over 150 tunnels in one small section of the yard and that is not even where they are concentrated.  If I am wrong and they are some other aggressive stinger, I think I am in trouble.  There are thousands of tunnels and I have no idea how many insects that represents.  Yay for pollination in my garden.  Yay for no termites.  More than slightly worried look for a possible attack on my person and DD.  She's not the gentlest of creatures yet.    I think I am going to keep my pest appointment for next Tuesday to see if they can verify the insect but would appreciate any feedback.

Re: XP Ground bees

  • I had them in my front yard and was worried they'd get me when I mowed the lawn. I got some OTC spray and killed them one evening.

  • I get miner bees every year.  They make a hole in the lawn and there is what looks like large granules of brown sugar around the holes.

They go away within a few weeks and don't sting.  If you want, spray at dusk when they are in their holes to get them all.

Excellent.  I was worried they might turn aggressive later but if they continue as they are we are in good shape.  I like having bees as pollinators, I just never thought I would play host to 1000s of them.

  • I know nothing about miner bees...but yellow jackets also nest in the ground and they DEFINITELY sting.  We have always used gasoline poured into the nest at dusk (when they are all home).  You only need a bit, as it's the fumes that get them.

I have to do this under my juniper before I dig it out in a couple of weeks.
