So, my DH is applying for a job in Churubusco. We're in Rhode Island now, so it would mean relocating.
So, I'll be visiting the Fort Wayne before we decide. What do you like to do/see there? Do you like living there? Are there good or bad areas to live?
Sorry for the broad questions. Thanks in advance for any input!
Re: Tell me about Fort Wayne
I have lived in Fort Wayne my entire life. It isn't a bad city, I think coming in as an outsider you will find way more to do than I ever could. I have children so parks an the zoo are favorites. There are alot of museums to check out, if you are in to that sort of thing.
There are definately good and bad areas. it really depends what you are used to and what you are looking for. The bad areas aren't considered bad to people who grew up in rough areas of some other cities, I'm told. hope it helps, ask more if you need to.
Hi!
I live in Fort Wayne and LOVE it! Like PP, there a lot of "lifers" here in Fort Wayne. I think this is just a sign of what a great town it is.
DH and I moved here almost 2 years ago and it is the perfect fit for us! He grew up in a the suburbs of a largish city, and I am from a small town. We think Fort Wayne is the best of both worlds. It is big enough to be interesting, small enough to be very friendly.
We do have great museums, minor league sports are huge, and there are tons of places to eat out. We have gotten really involved through volunteering and a couple of professional groups.
Fort Wayne is a very family oriented town, which is one reason we chose to move here. We do not have kids yet, but once we do we know this will be a great place to raise them. For now, we have put in effort to get to know people and have met a lot of great friends.
Churubusco is actually about 10 miles north of Fort Wayne, the north side is totally a great place to live--so this is a good thing!
If you have any more questions as you get closer to your visit, please let me know! I'm sure you're husband work will set you up with someone to tour you around, but if you need any help with directions or info about specific places you want to see, let me know! I could go on and on but don't want to overwhelm you! Best of luck!
My FI is from ft. wayne, and we would NEVER, EVER ,E-V-E-R, live there.... the economic down turn has hit there hard, and the bad areas are more so than the good ones. It is not a clean city like Indianapolis.... and there aren't extremely nice suburbs either from what i've heard.
Everyone I know that if from there and moved out has said they're glad they aren't there, and everyone I know that still lives there wishes they didn't....
except for my post obviously. And if you read the OP, she didn't ask about which area of Indy to move to. Have you actually ever been to Fort Wayne? There are gorgeous neighborhoods, I happen to live in one. I lived in Indy for 5 years and loved it, but moved away to find a lower cost of living, less crime and more professional opportunities.
Thanks for the input!
Mrs.Pamison - what sort of industries do you and your DH work in? My DH is an engineer, looking to get into project management at the company he's going to interview for. But, my background doesn't lend itself to any of the job openings I've found in preliminary searches. I have a BS in physics and am about to graduate with an MS in Oceanography... I'm guessing if I want/need to work, I'll have to get a teaching certificate and teach math and/or science. My only real skills that seem to be useful in that area are computer science type stuff.
We are both in the legal field. DH is an attorney and I am an assitant for another firm. the large selling point for both of us is that salaries are comprable to other cities, while our cost of living is much less.
To give you and idea, a nice 5-10 year old four bedroom home would be in the $150s. Again, I can go in to much more detail if you'd like.
I actually looked into a teaching certification. my bachelors in journalism and public relations, but I was not interested in doing that when we moved here. Indiana University/Purdue University has a program called Transition to teaching. I did very preliminary research about it, but basically you go to school all of one summer, one semester, and then student teach full time and are eligible to be licensed in Indiana. Here is a link with more details http://www.ipfw.edu/educ/transition/
Raytheon is a large company here that I don't know a ton about, but I know a couple of engineers who work there. You could check out http://www.raytheon.com/ for more info.
please let me know if you have more questions, I am happy to do my best to help!
ok so apparently i've offended people.... not my purpose.. sorry. i'm just saying that I PERSONALLY wouldn't live there... and i DID say out of the PEOPLE I KNOW no one likes it... not EVERYONE in the whole city hates it.....
ALSO, i come from a very small town, and now live in Fishers. Both of these places are VERY safe, and i just do not feel safe when i go to Ft. Wayne. ( and yes, i've actually been there, and i still really just don't like it)
When I said there are more bad areas than good, I'm not saying there are NO good or safe areas, they are just fewer than a lot of other places. and by "EXTREMELY NICE SUBURBS" i was COMPARING to the nice indy suburbs .. carmel, zionsville, etc. i understand that she wasn't asking about opinions of indy, but i've been to BOTH places and i was simply comparing Ft. Wayne to somewhere I live. SORRY.....
you did not offend me. I completely agree that Indy is a great place to live-and so is Fort Wayne. You are right, Fishers is a very safe place. I never said for one minute that there were not unsafe places in Fort Wayne, there are--just like Indy or any other metropolitan area. And if the OP had asked for the pro/cons of Indy vs.Fort Wayne, I could understand your point. I just found it pretty sad to knock a place so many people are happy to call home. I'm sorry that so many of your friends dislike Fort Wayne so much, I realize its not perfect, but I am very happy to speak about the positive aspects.
I heart you Mrs Palmison : )
I too live in the Fort Wayne area. It certainly is a midwest town. Very different than either coast. People are usually friendly and there is relatively minimal crime. Yes there is a mildly rougher part of Fort Wayne, but thats less than 1/4th of the whole city. There is wonderful zoo, botanical conservatory, the embassy (venue for broadway shows), museums, 2 malls, lots of great restaurants. Everything is easily accessible. Much like Mrs P said, the cost of living versus payscale is very good!
I find it interesting that your husband is an engineer as I too work in the construction field!
I am, and Mrs P is also usually on the pets boards, but feel free to page me on here or send me a PM too. I completely agree with Mrs. P's assessment of Fort Wayne.
I grew up there. I didn't like certain aspects of it. I prefer to live in a bigger city.
IMO, mostly what there is to do there for people my age is drinking and making babies. The schools are good, and the bars and restaurants are ok. I don't like drinking or making babies, so I don't want to live there.
I also had a lot of bad memories of my childhood. I guess that could have happened anywhere, not just FW, but still...
Oh, and Churubusco is a tiny tiny town. My mom used to work there. I think it's boring too.
I live in Fort Wayne, and I grew up in the country. While I do miss the quiet of the country, I love Fort Wayne for what it has. Depending on where you live in the city, there are restaurants (apparently Ft. Wayne is a test market for restaurants, so there's lots of places), bars and activities within walking distance. I like the convenience of everything here.
As with any larger city, there are nice areas and areas that aren't as nice. There is violent crime here, but I've also met the nicest people here as well. I love my neighborhood and the people who live here. Just an FYI about teaching here-- the Fort Wayne Community Schools just let go around 300 teachers, so that might be a hard place to land a job. Have you considered teaching some college courses?
Also there has been industry here that has been hard-hit, but most of industrial job losses are in the Goshen/Elkhart area. That being said, there are lots and lots of really nice houses here for stupid cheap prices. The cost of living here is fairly low compared to other large cities. H and I have been looking for a place on the north side of town and I've come across some amazing houses for under $150k.
As for Churubusco, I know that town well. I have several family members who live there and most of them work in the town as well. If you need anymore advice on what to see/do when you are visiting, send me a private message and I can help you out.
