Thoughts on Applegate Farms?

I've recently come to really miss turkey sandwiches. Not turkey like leftover thanksgiving turkey, but the deli meat kind of turkey breast. I found some organic, certified humane sliced turkey breast made by Applegate Farms. Their website looks great...Talks a great deal about their sustainable methods and humane treatment of animals, the whole nine yards. It's a big company, which always gives me pause. I want to make sure I'm not buying a Horizon type organic product. If anyone knows the dirty on a company it's you gals.

On a side note; It still occurs to me every now and then that I have to put THIS much thought into things like turkey sandwiches. Maybe my in-laws are right and I'm totally nuts. lol.

Re: Thoughts on Applegate Farms?

  • I haven't had the applegate farms. I do buy the in house turkey breast at the deli at whole foods. it is AWESOME!!!!!!!! they roast it or whatever fresh and it has no added anything. it tastes so much better than any standard "cold cut" like turkey.

  • I don't know but I'm interested to try it now! I've never heard of Applegate Farms.

You aren't nuts :) I talked to my mother-in-law once about being green and she seemed completely disinterested. I help her clean her house and she uses products that I'm totally against and it takes everything in me to not "educate" her. She has absolutely no interest in getting rid of her current products. A while ago, I found a big bottle of white vinegar under her sink so I started cleaning with it and she asked me what in the world was I doing?! She thought the smell would never go away. I still use it to clean her toilets because she doesn't know :)

Ermm..I'm not positive about this, but I think that Whole Foods actually uses Applegate Farms.

I prefer Applegate Farms and Boarshead brand low salt turkey breast. I haven't really looked into the humanity of the brands but I do like that they are all natural (at least the turkey is on both brands the roasted chicken on the Applegate farms is too)--no preservatives and no nitrates, nitrites etc. I get migraines and these two brands are really great as an all natural protein booster.

  • I don't know much about them.

But if it turns out that they are not a good company to support, see if you can find Organic Valley deli meat.

  • I was wondering that myself....i too thought Applegate looked like a "good" company--at least on the outset.

Though I'm not quite as good--I looked it up AFTER purchasing their turkey bacon that was on sale at my local Earth Fare.  It was on sale AND I had a coupon--it's a frugal EF-girl's dream come true!  (I just hope I wasn't totally duped!)

    This is an op-ed piece...

  • whole foods does sell applegate farms plus something called farm fields their own brand, not 100% sure on that name, in their deli case. however they also sell "in house" roasted turkey and roast beef. it's in the deli case and it looks different than the standard packaged deli turkey. it's fresh and delicious. it's not in the cold cut wrapper. it's just a huge hunk of turkey breast that they then slice on the deli slicer. it's comparable in price - most of the turkey in the deli case is $10.99 per pound. in my opnion it tastes so much better than the other cold cut prepared turkey

Right. It links to the President's Cancer Panel report.

This is the brand the deli at the co-op where I shop uses, and I am pretty trusting of their judgment.
