My brother in law has been living at my parents' cabin for the last couple months when he transfered to a new job in his company. The plan is for my sister to stay in Chicago and get their house on the market and then the two of them will be moving to the city where BIL's job is and get a new house. BIL commutes the hour each way right now so that they don't have to mess around with an apartment lease in the interim.
2 nights ago, BIL heard some rustling outside in the frontyard and turned on the outside lights and saw two shadows that were much much much too large to be racoons. Two baby bears were in the tree just off the deck trying to get my parents' bird feeder down. BIL opened the door a little bit and clapped his shoes together and they scampered down the tree and ran off. No sign of Mama.
Yesterday, BIL gets home from work and the birdfeeder is just gone. He eventually found it in the neighbor's yard mangled to heck and all the birdseed was gone. There was a butt print under the feeder's former location that would have taken up a loveseat and accompanying pawprints to match!! Mama bear found the feeder!
I'm nervous because I'm going up there by myself until DH can join me tomorrow. We always take our dog out on a leash at night so I know she won't get into trouble with bear family but still- I'm afraid we'll both get bullrushed if we accidentally get between Mama and Babies. It is as dark as ink up there at night and once you're out of the range of the lights, you cant' see squat. Guess I'll be buying a whistle, getting a can of mace, and carrying a flashlight when we go outside after dark!!
Re: Eeeks!
We've had our feeder swiped by what we suspect are bears before but it has always been during the week when nobody has been around to see it. We're typically only there on the weekends and it is pretty quiet up there during the week. It doesn't really come as a surprise to us I guess that they're hanging around, but you'd think with the activity in the house, they'd be more skittish. Black bears are typically very human fearful and are really only aggressive if food or their cubs are involved but still - I don't want to surprise one! I'm not sure who would be more afraid!
BIL has been living up there for just a bit more than a month now I think... they're splitting the weekends up between my sister driving to the cabin and BIL driving to Chicago. Tough situation but they're making the best of it since this is a huge opportunity for BIL's career.
I want to say, "awww baby bears," but I know I would flip my shiit if I saw or ran into one.
I'd run the crazy out of the pup before you hit the cabin, restrict the water intake that evening, and wait till the last possible moment to take the dog out so it's a quick break...maybe, i dunno.
I'd also bang trash can lids together, wear garlic around my neck, and talk REALLY loud....okay, I have no bear tips really.
Anyway, have a great weekend! H and I love our weekend getaways to the mountains or the lake, it's a such a good break from daily grind.
LoL!
I had one run out across the road in front of my car last summer...I was completely protected inside the car, and I still flipped my shiit!! haha
My childhood home was at the edge of the woods and we often woke up ion the morning to find our garbage can taken up into the back yard, bag lifted out and then garbage tossed all around. Also, there was more than one occassion when I went out on the fron tporch because I was waiting for a friend to pick me up, only to see a large brown bear standing on 2 feet at the foot of the steps! Needless to say I didn't go anywhere when my friend finally arrived.
