Does anyone have a homemade dishwasher detergent that actually works?

I was making a recipe from borax, washing soda, and citric acid but no matter how much vinegar I added, or how little mixture I used, my glasses came out extremely cloudy. Does anyone have a recipe that results in clear, clean dishes?

  • I had the same problem with that recipe.  I got so frustrated eventually I just broke down and bought some Seventh Gen.

    GL!

  • I actually use baking soda instead of washing soda and a couple squirts of vinegar and lemon juice. Seems to be no problem....how much dry mix are you putting in at a time?
  • ooh, I'll try the baking soda.

I started off with two tablespoons, then slowly reduced the amount I was putting in until I was at a teaspoon. It didn't seem to make a difference. I wonder if type of water makes a difference. (hard vs soft water)

  • Your water type makes 100% of the difference. You have to play with the ratios to get it right for your water type. Also, adding vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher helps. (ETA- Ooops! I just realized you said you already tried the vinegar.)

I have used just the Washing Ash and Borax without the citric acid. I also used the vinegar as the rinse aid with fantastic results. But I also have town water which may make a difference.
