All Rovers Rescue Friends (ARRF)?

Does anyone know anything about this rescue in Toledo, OH?  I put in an application today to adopt this guy:

I was just curious to see if anyone had worked with them before on a volunteer basis or had adopted from them.  Thanks!

Re: All Rovers Rescue Friends (ARRF)?

  • i do not know the details, but i know they are not welcome at the local humane society's events.  most other area rescues are.

  • We adopted Sirius from them four years ago. It was our first adoption experience and everything seemed legit. They didn't do a home visit but they did call the references we put on our application.

  • Also, Sirius' foster mom left the group about a year after we adopted him. They purchase dogs at puppymill auctions as well as take in owner surrenders. There was a lot of debate about this practice, thus the reason why Sirius' foster mom left.

If you don't mind my asking, how was your adoption experience with them?

Wow.  While I certainly would not object to adopting a dog that was rescued from a puppy mill situation, I do not want to support a rescue that buys dogs from the puppy mills to make a profit through an "adoption."

  • No problem!

Like I said, it was our first adoption experience so I had nothing to compare it to. We filled out the application. She called our references then we did a phone interview with his foster mom. Since we would be first time dog owners, I was expecting the phone call to end with us scheduling a home visit. Instead, she said that if we are still interested in adopting him, he was ours. I met her and Sirius at the vet ARRF uses since he was scheduled for his last round of puppy shots a couple days after we were approved.

  • The argument for this practice seems to be that if we don't buy them, then they will be destroyed or purchase by another miller.

I am not at all familiar with mill rescue so perhaps some of the other posters will chime in with their experience.

Thank you.  I guess I will just see how this goes!

they are, to my knowledge, a non-profit org. But they do sometimes pay a "pull" fee to millers. They also pull dogs from shelters and they cover vet costs for less "desirable" dogs. My group has worked with them and several friends have adopted from them and I have only heard good things.

Thank you so much for your response.  I was worrying that this might be one of those scenarios where it is really a BYB or mill posing a rescue based on what was mentioned in the PP.  I looked at their site and the fact that there are varying ages/special needs made me worry less about that.  I am really looking forward to hearing more about Franklin and possibly adopting him from them!

  • Thanks for clarifying that up, ST!
  • This is 4 years later, so I don't know if I will get a response or not, but it's worth a try.

How did your adoption with the schnauzer end up going? I just put in an application for a basset hound puppy. I've never heard of the rescue either, so I was searching for input. Thanks!
